UCO Bank

UCO Bank, founded in 1943 by GD Birla, is a public sector bank with presence across India and abroad. The United Commercial Bank, as it was formerly called, is headquartered in Kolkata. After nationalisation in July 1969, the bank expanded its services across the country.

In 1985, it underwent a name change through an Act of Parliament and it was renamed as UCO Bank.

In 2003, the bank went public with a ₹200 crore IPO and became a listed company. It has emerged as one of the most trusted PSU banks in India.

Its market capitalisation stood at ₹50,215 crore as of December 18, 2023. UCO Bank share price has gained over 223% in the last three years.

The bank primarily engaged in various banking and financial services, which include personal banking, corporate banking, NRI banking, loans and credit cards. It also caters to agriculture and MSME sectors through customised products and services.

Business operations

UCO Bank has over 3,000 branches across India and a presence in key international financial hubs like Hong Kong and Singapore. It offers foreign exchange services at more than 50 centres in India.

The bank provides a range of products and services. Personal banking services include deposits, savings, loans, RTGS services, debit cards and credit cards. For NRI clients, it provides products like FCNR accounts and remittance services.

UCO Bank collaborates with fintech companies for initiatives such as digital merchant onboarding, UPI123 and e-commerce marketplaces.

It's currently developing an end-to-end digital lead management system and a digital lending platform that streamlines the loan application process, KYC validation, eligibility checks, sanctioning, digital document execution and loan disbursement with minimal manual intervention.

UCO Bank has also formed co-lending partnerships with Muthoot Fincorp Ltd, Aadhar Housing Finance Ltd, IIFL Finance Ltd and Capri Global Housing Finance Ltd aimed at expanding its retail segment. To increase its gold loan portfolio, 35 branches have been designated as gold boutiques.

MSME lending is a key focus area for UCO Bank. It launched tailored MSME products like UCO GST Mitra, Modified PMEGP Scheme, UCO MSME Gold Loan, UCO contractor scheme and MSME property loan in the fiscal year 2022-23.

Financial Highlights

Total income of the bank stood at ₹20,158.98 crore for FY23, up 11.49% over the previous financial year. The profit after tax (PAT) for FY 2022-23 nearly doubled to ₹1862.34 crore from ₹929.76 crore in FY22. Net interest income (NII) surged in FY23 to ₹7,343.13 crore from ₹6,473 crore in the preceding fiscal. Net interest margin (NIM) increased in FY23 to 2.87% from 2.81% in FY22. The bank’s non performing assets dropped to ₹561.37 crore in FY 2022-23 compared to ₹718.59 crore in the previous financial year. The earnings per share (EPS) increased to ₹1.53 in FY23 compared to ₹0.77 in FY22. The operating profit dropped to ₹4,340.67 crore compared to ₹4,797 crore in FY 22.
