RELIANCE COMMUNICATIONS

Part of the Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group, Reliance Communication Limited offers wireline and wireless telecommunication services to government and business services. It serves nearly 40,000 businesses of different sizes, spread across various sectors including banking, financial services and insurance, manufacturing, logistics, healthcare and information technology. The company businesses include India Data Centre Business, National Long Distance Business and International Long Distance Business.

Reliance Communication's offering includes data centre services, enterprise voice, cloud telephone, access number services, collaboration services, wholesale voice and value-added services (VAS), cloud networking and network connectivity.

Business operations

Reliance Communications' data solutions for homes and small enterprises is present across 29 cities. The company owns the world’s largest private undersea cable system through its subsidiary Global Cloud Xchange.

Reliance Communications Ltd was incorporated in 2004 as a private company with the name Reliance Infrastructure Developers Pvt Ltd. In 2005, the company was converted into a public limited company and the name was changed to Reliance Infrastructure Developers Ltd. The equity shares of the company were acquired by Reliance Industries Ltd and the company became the wholly owned subsidiary of Reliance Industries Ltd. A year later, the name of the company was changed from Reliance Communication Ventures Ltd to Reliance Communications Ltd.

With the division of the business in the Ambani family in 2005, RIL was divided into two parts with the telecommunication business going to Anil Ambani.

In 2007, RCom acquired Yipes in a $300 million deal. The company introduced a money transfer facility through phone in partnership with ICICI Bank. The company teamed up with Microsoft Corp to foray into Internet Protocol Television (IPTV). The next year, the company entered into a joint venture with US-French telecom equipment supplier Alcatel-Lucent to provide network services to telecommunications operators.

In 2009. telecom operator Etisalat DB, formerly known as Swan Telecom, announced that it will be outsourcing its telecom infrastructure requirements to Reliance Communications as part of a ₹10,000-crore deal spread over the next 10 years.

Reliance Communications, in 2009, introduced one paise per SMS for both GSM and CDMA customers, triggering a war of tariffs on data services from voice calls.

In 2013, Reliance Communications (RCOM) entered into a billion-dollar contract with Alcatel-Lucent in a bid to improve network performance and customer experience to offer Next Generation telecom solutions across multiple devices and platforms.

The next year, Reliance Jio Infocomm and Reliance Communications signed a Master Services Agreement for the sharing of RCom's city fiber infrastructure.

Reliance Communications entered into a strategic partnership with Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio for change in spectrum allotment in the 800 MHz band across 9 circles from RCOM to RJIL, and sharing of spectrum in the 800 MHz band across 17 circles in 2016. In 2018, SSTL merged with RCom in October 2017.

– Reliance Communications Limited's revenue from operations in FY23 was ₹479 crore, a 13.85% year-on-year decline from ₹556 crore in the last financial year. – The company reported a net loss of ₹14,603 crore in FY23 as against ₹6,684 crore in FY22. – Its basic earnings per share (EPS) declined to a negative ₹52.83 in FY23 from negative ₹24.12 in the last financial year.
