Business operations
Orient Green Power has expanded its business with the acquisition and development of renewable energy assets from third parties. The company's customer base includes state electricity boards, distribution companies, industrial consumers, private consumers and power trading companies. The company sells power to private power consumers looking to supplement state power supplies for captive purposes. The sale of power to state electricity boards is typically under a long-term agreement.
The company was incorporated in 2006. Two years later, it raised $55 million from Olympus Capital Holdings, Asia Bessemer Venture Partners and Shriram EPC Ltd for setting up wind biomass small hydel and biogas power projects. The same year, the company acquired Amrit Environmental Technologies Pvt Ltd. It also took a majority stake in Shriram Powergen Ltd by way of a share purchase agreement.
Orient Green Power acquired a 100% stake in Bharath Wind Farm Ltd in 2010 taking its installed capacity to 213.03 MW which comprised 172.53 MW of wind energy and 40.5 MW of biomass project.
Orient Green teamed up with Japan-based Nishi-Nippon Environment Energy Co Inc and formed Orient Eco Energy Ltd to set up a 7.5 MW poultry litter-based power generation project in Tamil Nadu's Namakkal.
The company further expanded its presence in states like Gujarat and Maharashtra; and internally in Croatia, Sri Lanka, the Czech Republic and Hungary. The company also commissioned the development of a 15 MW mini hydroelectric power project in Odisha.
Orient Green developed biomass projects in Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Punjab and Maharashtra. In 2011, the company achieved a capacity of 300 MW in renewable energy. It also signed a development agreement with Jet Airways (India) Ltd through its subsidiary Godrej Buildcon Private Limited.
In FY23, the company focused on reducing the finance cost and prompt loan services which resulted in improved ratings and helped it in refinancing ₹721 crores at a reduced rate of interest from the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA). The late payment surcharge (LPS) scheme introduced by the Ministry of Power helped the company realise the long pending dues from state-owned discoms. The company witnessed a dip in power generation due to low wind availability.
