Nestle India Limited is the Indian subsidiary of the multinational company Nestle, Switzerland. It was founded and incorporated in 1959. The parent company along with its group entities hold over 60% stake in the Indian subsidiary. Nestle India is a major player in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry in India.
The company established its first factory in Punjab in 1961 and subsequently expanded to other regions by setting up factories in Tamil Nadu, Goa and Karnataka.
As of January 29, 2024, Nestle India's market capitalisation was over ₹2,40,000 crores. Nestle India share price went up by more that 40% in last three years.
Business operations
Nestle India’s core business has a wide range of food products including chocolates, milk-based products, coffee, tea, baby food and instant foods. The company's brand portfolio includes popular names such as Nescafe, Sunrise, Kokocrunch, Maggi and Cerelac in the FMCG food segment.
One of its oldest brands is Gerber. The company launched the globally popular and iconic brand Gerber in India, introducing two variants: spinach & carrot and mango & berry. In 2007, Nestle acquired the brand as part of its vision to offer a range of nutritious food options worldwide.
Nestle India's Maggi noodles brand has been a staple in the country for 40 years, offering a variety of flavours. The Maggi portfolio also includes Maggi Pazzta, Maggi sauces and Maggi coconut milk powder.
The company, which has its global headquarters in Switzerland, currently operates eight manufacturing facilities across states like Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Nestle India manages its operations through its head office in New Delhi and branch offices in Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. It has also established a research & development centre to support global product development initiatives.
The company's distribution network starts from its main warehouse, distributors, wholesalers and retailers across all states and Union Territories in the country. Retail outlets range from small grocery shops to supermarket chains, ensuring widespread availability of Nestle products.
In the last financial year, milk products and nutrition accounted for 40.6% of the turnover. Prepared dishes and cooking aids contributed 31.6%. Confectionery items contributed 15.8%, and powdered and liquid beverages made up 12% of the total turnover.
The company has over 4,000 suppliers, impacting the lives of over 2,00,000 farmers, retailers, vendors, distributors and others. It reaches consumers through a wide network of distributors, traditional and organised trade, e-commerce, canteen stores and pharmacies.
A Direct-to-Consumer (D2C) e-commerce platform, www.mynestle.in, was launched during FY23, offering Nestle products manufactured in India in select towns of the National Capital Region (NCR).
Financial highlights
– Nestle India follows a calendar year to report its financials. The annual revenue for the year ending 2022 was ₹16,789.5 crore as against the previous year’s ₹14,664.9 crores. – The profit after tax (PAT) was ₹2,390.5 crore compared to the previous year’s ₹2,118.4 crore. – The EBITDA was reported ₹3,659 crore in FY23 as against ₹3,485 crore during the previous year. – The earnings per share in 2022 was ₹247.94 as compared to ₹219.72 during the previous year.
