Electrosteel Castings

Electrosteel Castings Limited (ECL) is a Kolkata-based company. The company is primarily engaged in production of ductile iron pipes, flange iron pipes and ductile iron fittings. It also produces other products such as cast iron pipes, ferro alloy steel, cement and metallurgical coke. The company also owns captive power plants and coke oven facilities.

The company with over six decades of experience in the water infrastructure sector is a pioneer in the production of various types of iron pipes. It was the first company to set up a ductile iron pipes plant in India.

ECL is the leading manufacturer of ductile iron pipes in the Indian subcontinent with a production capacity of 7,00,000 tonnes per annum. It is the third-biggest manufacturer of ductile iron spun pipes in the world. These pipes are used for laying drinking water supply lines, sewerage disposal systems, agricultural irrigation purposes and industrial water supply.

ECL’s operations span across five continents and more than 110 countries. ECL exports its products to countries in the United States, South America, Europe, North and South African countries, South East Asia and the Middle East. It has set up overseas offices in Spain, the United Kingdom, France, the US, Singapore and Algeria.

ECL started its operations in 1955. It entered into the production of cast iron spun pipes along with other steel castings in 1959. The company set up its first manufacturing plant at Khardah, near Kolkata.

ECL acquired Chennai-based Shakti Pipes in 1982 to increase the production capacity of cast iron spun pipes. In 1994, the company built a 60,000 tonnes per annum ductile iron pipes plant at Khardah near Kolkata, a first in India at the time. The production capacity was increased to 120,000 TPA in 2000.

ECL acquired a 46% stake in Lanco Industries Ltd in March 2002 to expand its product portfolio. The target company, now named ECL-SW, was producing DI pipes, pig iron cement and castings.

The company in 2019 set up a ferro alloy plant at Haldia. In 2022, the company merged Srikalahasthi Pipes Ltd with itself.

The market capitalisation of Electrosteel Castings Ltd stood at over ₹11,600 crore, as of February 5, 2024. Electrosteel Castings share price has surged over 730% in the last three years.

Electrosteel Castings Limited (ECL) Business Operations

ECL is involved in the manufacturing of various types of iron pipes, ferro alloy steel and cement production. The company at present has five manufacturing facilities in West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. ECL’s products have received quality certification from globally renowned bodies such as UL (USA), FM (USA), BSI (UK), SASO (Saudi Arabia), DVGW (Germany), OVGW (Austria), BV (Italy) and IGH (Croatia).

Ductile iron pipes

The company produces ductile iron pipes that are used in raw and clear water transmission, distribution network of potable water, water supply for industrial/process plant applications and ash-slurry handling and disposal systems, among others. The company produced 715,129 MT of DI Pipes during the year 2022-23 compared to 603,751 MT in 2021-22. The DI pipes produced by the company are sold in India and globally to nearly 90 countries spread over 5 continents.

Cast iron (CI) pipes

Electrosteel Castings Ltd manufactures cast iron spun pipe at Elavur plant, near Chennai in Tamil Nadu. Cast iron pipes are used in applications like new water supply works, sewerage pumping mains and old cast iron pipe replacement works. The cast iron pipe plant, with a total capacity of 90,000 TPA produced 26,588 MT of CI pipe during the Financial Year 2022-23 compared to 19,049 MT in the Financial Year 2021-22. Pig iron is the main raw material used in the production of CI pipes and is obtained from domestic sources.

DI fittings and accessories

ECL produced 20,343 MT of DI Fittings in 2022-23 as against 20,684 MT in 2021-22.

Silico manganese ferro alloy

ECL built its ferro alloy manufacturing unit at Haldia in mid-2019 with a capacity of 16000 TPA. It also has a Ferro Alloy plant at Srikalahasthi. Ferro Alloy Plant at Haldia Works produced 16,431 mt in 2022-23 against 14,059 mt in 2021-22. The company’s ferro alloy plant at Srikalahasthi produced prime ferro silicon of 15353 MT in 2022-23 against 15,271 MT in 2021-22

Cement Plant

Its Cement plant produced portland slag cement of 55,671 MT in 2022-23 compared to 91,797 MT in 2021-22.
