Headquartered in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, Craftsman Automation Limited is a diversified engineering company in the private sector. Incorporated in 1986 as Craftsman Automation Private Limited, its journey began as a small-scale industry unit. The company, in 2001, started an aluminium foundry unit at Kurichi, Coimbatore. It commissioned a satellite unit in Pithampur in 2005.
In 2007, Craftsman Automation Private Limited entered into a joint venture with Carl Stahl International GmbH, Germany, renaming the new entity as Carl Stahl Craftsman Enterprise Private Limited. Craftsman Automation holds a 30% stake in the joint venture.
The next year, Craftsman Automation Incorporated two subsidiaries – Craftsman Europe BV (formerly Craftsman Marine BV) and Craftsman Automation Singapore Pte Ltd.
In 2017, the company began its machining services in Bengaluru.
On April 30, 2018, Craftsman Automation Private Limited was converted into a public limited company and renamed Craftsman Automation Limited.
The company began the winding-up process of its subsidiary Craftsman Automation Singapore Pte Ltd in 2020. In March 2021, it floated an initial public offering (IPO). After successful completion of the process, Craftsman Automation’s shares were listed on National Stock Exchange of India (NSEI) and BSE on March 25, 2021.
In February 2023, aiming to boost its presence in the passenger vehicle segment, Caftsman Automation picked up a controlling stake of 76% in Tiruvalur-based Dr. Axion India.
As of December 31, 2023, the promoter and promoter group shareholding came down to 54.99% from 58.77% at the end of FY23. During the same period, the public stake went up to 45.01% from 41.23%.
In the public segment, the domestic mutual funds held 12.37% of the shares at the end of FY23, with their stake marginally going up to 13.04% as of December 31, 2023. During the same period, the ownership of domestic institutions also went up from 16.55% to 17.22%, while that of foreign institutions increased from 8.79% to 12.51%. The foreign ownership was 17.52% of the total shares.
Business Operations
The company makes and supplies components and sub-assemblies for many industrial sectors, including iengineering segments, automotive, pharma and e-commerce.
It has 12 manufacturing plants spread over six states – Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Haryana and Karnataka. Three units are located in Coimbatore, three others in Pune and two in Bengaluru. The remaining facilities are in Pithampur, Jamshedpur, Sriperumbudur and Faridabad.
It designs products, undertakes precision machining, and caters to the clients’ requirements of casting, welding and fabrication, besides related processes like surface and heat treatment.
The market capitalisation of Craftsman Automation Limited stood at over ₹8850 crore as of February 29, 2024. Craftsman Automation share price has surged nearly 27% in the last one year.
Financial Highlights
– The revenue from operations grew 43% to ₹3,182.60 crore in FY23 from ₹2217.02 crore in FY22.
– Consolidated EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation) increased to ₹696.63 crore in FY23 from ₹541.94 crore in FY22.
– The profit after tax (PAT) was ₹250.96 crore in FY23 from ₹163.09 crore in FY22.
– The earnings per share (EPS) increased over 52% to ₹117.56 in FY23 as against ₹77.19 in FY22.
