Coffee Day Enterprises Ltd is the parent company of the Coffee Day Group, which houses the brand Café Coffee Day (CCD).
Apart from running India’s largest coffee chain spread across more than 200 cities in India, the company has businesses in the hospitality, financial services, tech parks and SEZs sectors.
Coffee Day group started its operations in India in 1993. The company was originally formed as a partnership firm under the name Coffeeday Holding Co. It was thereafter converted to a private limited company as Coffee Day Holdings Company Private Limited.
The name of the company was changed to Coffee Day Resorts Private Limited and, subsequently, to Coffee Day Enterprises Private Limited. Later, the company was converted into a public limited company, and its name was changed to Coffee Day Enterprises Limited.
The shares of Coffee Day Enterprises got listed on BSE and NSE in November 2015. As of December 2023, the company had a market capitalisation of ₹1,393 crore. Coffee Day share price has gone up over 32% in the past one year.
Business operations
Coffee Day Enterprises’ business operations range from retail and hospitality to technology parks, logistics and investments. As of March 31, 2023, the company had 17 subsidiaries (including step-down subsidiaries), 4 associate companies and 3 joint ventures. Let’s take a detailed look at its key divisions:
Retail: Coffee Day Group started its retail operations in 1993 through its subsidiary Coffee Day Global Ltd. The company had opened its first cafe in 1996 on Brigade Road in Bengaluru. Coffee Day (CCD) now owns 469 cafes in 154 cities and 268 value express kiosks. Apart from the standard CCD cafe, the company runs two other formats of retail cafe -- The Square and Xpress. The Square is a premium cafe offering international and local single-origin coffees and fine dining options. These stores are present in New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai. The other format known as Xpress was launched in February 2003. It is an on-the-go food and beverages kiosk situated at convenient locations such as large corporate campuses, office buildings, hospitals, metro and railways stations.
Vending business: Forming an important part of the vertically integrated business model, the company has developed vending machines using in-house technology that dispenses hot coffee as well as teas of different flavours.
Tech Parks and SEZs: Coffee Day’s wholly owned subsidiary Tanglin was set up for the development of technology parks and Special Economic Zones (SEZs), offering bespoke facilities for Information Technology - Information Technology Enabled Services.
Investments: Another subsidiary, Coffee Day Trading, was established in the year 2000 to provide companies with access to capital.
Hospitality: Coffee Day also owns and operates luxury boutique resorts, one directly through the company, and two through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Coffee Day Hotels and Resorts Pvt. Ltd (CDHRPL), under the brand ‘The Serai’. These resorts are located at Chikmagalur, Bandipur and Kabini, all in Karnataka. It also holds equity interest in a luxury resort in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands with management control.
Financial highlights
- During the fiscal year ended March 2023, net revenue increased 59% to ₹924 crore in 2022-23 compared with ₹582 crores reported in 2021-22.
- The consolidated net loss for FY23 stood at ₹380 crore compared with loss of ₹121 crore in the previous financial year. The loss during FY23 is mainly due to write-off of balances from Sical Logistics Ltd to the company and its subsidiaries of ₹392 crore.
- Operating loss for FY23 stood at ₹134 crore compared to profit of ₹73 crore in FY22.
