The company is based out of Kochi, Kerala, which also builds complex vessels for the Indian Navy, Coast Guard and global clients.
Cochin Shipyard Limited is a government-owned Miniratna company which comes under the Ministry of Ports. The company has established partnerships with specialist firms from regions such as the South East, Europe, USA for technology transfer and material packages.
The yard has also been chosen to construct India’s first indigenous Air Defence Ship. Also the shipyard plays a crucial role in training graduate engineers to become marine engineers.

Cochin Shipyard Limited was established in 1972 as a part of India’s vision to build a strong shipbuilding industry. It was set up with technical collaboration from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries of Japan, the shipyard began its operations in Kochi due to its natural deep-water harbour.
Over the years, Cochin Shipyard evolved from building commercial vessels to handling complex defence projects, including aircraft carriers. A major milestone came with the construction of INS Vikrant, India’s first indigenously built aircraft carrier.
Today, Cochin Shipyard stands as a symbol of India’s growing maritime and defence capabilities.
