Key business segments

Coking coal:

Majorly used in steel manufacturing and metallurgical industries, coking coals form coherent beads with strong and porous mass when heated in the absence of air.

Semi coking coal:

They are blended with coking coal as their coherent beads are not as strong. They are mainly used as blendable coal in steel making, merchant coke manufacturing and other metallurgical industries.

Non-coking coal:

These coals do not have any coking properties, and are mainly used in the manufacture of fertiliser, cement, glass, ceramic, paper, chemical and brick, along with applications in heating purposes.

Washed and beneficiated coal:

This category of coal is used to produce hard coke in steel manufacturing, along with a key application in power generation, while beneficiated non-coking coal is used in industries like cement and sponge iron.

Middlings and rejects:

Middlings are used for generating power, and by domestic fuel plants, cement plants, brick manufacturing units, and industrial plants. Rejects are used in fluidised bed combustion (FBC) boilers for road repairs and land filling.

Coal Products

Coal India also produces products like tar, heavy oil, light oil and soft pitch which are used in furnaces and boilers of industrial plants and power houses.
