Castrol India Limited is primarily engaged in the business of manufacturing and marketing automotive and industrial lubricants. Castrol India was established in 1979 as a private limited company under the name Indrol Lubricants and Specialities Private Limited. It operates as a subsidiary of Castrol Limited UK, which is part of the BP Group. Castrol Limited UK, a wholly owned subsidiary of BP, holds a 51% stake in Castrol India.
The company established a state-of-the-art blending plant and brake fluid plant at Patalganga in Maharashtra in 1982. By 1985, both the brake fluid plant and the lube oil blending plant were operational. It inaugurated the second phase of its lube oil refining plant in 1986. The company established a new plant in the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli at Silvassa in 1994 by investing ₹50 crore in technology for lubricant blending.

Business operations
It is the market leader in the retail automotive lubricant segment. Castrol India produces a variety of car oils and fluids including engine oils, axle lubricants, brake fluids, auto transmission fluids and greases. Its motorcycle oils and fluids include motorcycle engine oils, brake fluids, chain lubricants, fork oil, greases, bike points and gear oils.
The company also supplies EV fluids to four-wheeler EV OEMs such as Tata Motors, MG Motor and BYD.
Renowned brands under the company's umbrella include Castrol CRB, Castrol GTX, Castrol Activ, Castrol MAGNATEC, and Castrol VECTON. Its customers span automotive manufacturing, mining, machinery and wind energy sectors.
It operates three manufacturing plants situated at Patalganga in Maharashtra, Paharpur in West Bengal and Silvassa in Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
Castrol India operates both in India and abroad. Within India, it operates through three blending plants and a distribution network comprising around 350 distributors, facilitating access to consumers and customers through over 100,000 retail outlets.
Castrol Auto Service expanded to 230 car workshops across 110 cities in 2022. Castrol Bike Points exceeded 5,215 outlets nationwide and Castrol Express Oil Change outlets increased to 42. The company's products are distributed through 335 distributors who service close to 1,07,000 customers and sub-distributors who reach out to additional outlets in semi-urban and rural markets. The company also serves close to 3,400 customers directly, and in some cases through its distributors. To expand its network further, Castrol India entered into a strategic collaboration with Ki Mobility Solutions (KMS) through myTVS for both two and four-wheelers in 2022.
