BEML Limited, formerly Bharat Earthmovers Limited, is a public sector company. Incorporated in 1964, the public sector undertaking of the Defence Ministry is primarily engaged in manufacture of rail coaches and spare parts, and mining equipment.

BEML is pioneering the Make in India initiative of the central government catering to the needs of customers across industries. The company plays a significant role in manufacturing different products and offering technology solutions for defence, rail, power, coal, steel, irrigation, construction and mining sectors.

BEML has achieved major strides in Indian defence systems, Metro Rail locomotives. The defence PSU has 4 manufacturing units in Bengaluru, Mysore, Kolar Gold Fields and Palakkad. Besides manufacturing, the company provides test facilities to private entities, particularly promoting the start-up ecosystem.

BEML’s market capitalisation stood at over ₹11,700 crore as of December 30, 2023. BEML share price has surged nearly 185% in the last three years.

BEML business operations

The defence sector PSU has reached an annual turnover of ₹4,300 crore from ₹5 crore per annum in its initial years. The company’s primary business verticals include defence and aerospace, mining and construction, and rail and metro.

The company also operates three strategic business units- technology division, trading division and international business division. The technology division offers end-to-end engineering solutions while the trading division deals in various products for non-company entities. BEML’s international business division manages all its export operations.

BEML is in the forefront of supporting India’s defence sector with major products such as high mobility vehicles, trailers /military wagons, armoured recovery vehicles and pontoon bridge systems. BEML supports Indian Railways and all Metro Rail Corporations by manufacturing high quality rail coaches, metro rail cars, maintenance rail vehicles and freight carriers. The company also offers metro cars, passenger coaches, EMUs, rail bus and overhead equipment and inspection cars for Indian Railways and Metro Rail Corporations.

BEML is also a major player in the mining and heavy construction industry. It manufactures bulldozers, excavators and other earthmoving equipment besides developing diesel engines to support heavy machinery.

BEML has set up a global service centre at Nagpur, and centres of excellence in Mysore and KGF. These centres provide internal training to BEML employees for upskilling and technology enhancement. BEML also supports all their vendors by providing necessary training to vendor’s employees.

Financial results

• The company’s revenue from operations stood at ₹3,899 crore for FY23, compared to ₹4,337 crore in the preceding financial year.
• Its profit after tax (PAT) increased to ₹159 crore in FY23 compared to ₹135 crore in FY22.
• Earnings per share (EPS) increased to ₹38.13 in FY23 as against ₹ 32.32 in FY22.
• The company’s capital expenditure stood at ₹2,972 crore in FY23.
