Shipping Corporation of India Limited is a government-owned company engaged in the business of transportation of goods and passengers. The company's operations can be divided into three segments – linear, bulk carrier tanker and technical and offshore. Its fleet includes bulk carriers, crude oil tankers, container vessels, LPG carriers, offshore supply vessels and passenger cum cargo vessels. Shipping Corporation also manages vessels for various government departments and other organisations. Starting its journey with 19 vessels, the company, over the years, has emerged as the largest shipping company in India in terms of Indian-flagged tonnage. It owns and operates nearly one-third of Indian tonnage, servicing both domestic and international trades.
Business operations
The company was originally incorporated as Eastern Shipping Corporation Ltd in 1950. Following the amalgamation of Western Shipping Corporation Ltd into the company in 1961, the company was renamed Shipping Corporation of India Ltd. It entered the business of crude oil transportation in 1964. Shipping Corporation acquired its first very large crude carriers in 1975. Nearly a decade later, the company diversified into offshore supply vessels through the acquisition of 10 offshore supply vessels in 1984.
In 1987, it set up the Maritime Training Institute in Mumbai. The company diversified into chemical tankers and cryogenic operations in 1991. Following the divestment of 18.51% equity shares in favour of financial institutions, mutual funds banks and FIIs, in 1992, the company was converted into a public entity. The company was listed on the Indian stock markets a year later.
Shipping Corporation of India was categorised as a Mini Ratna company in 2000. It entered into a joint venture with Mitsui OSK Lines Ltd, Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha, Qatar Shipping Company QSC and Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha Ltd, making entry into the LNG transportation business in 2004.
Following a joint venture arrangement with Forbes and Sterling Investments for operations in the chemical tanker in 2006.
The company signed its biggest-ever shipbuilding order with Hyundai of Korea for 4 Aframax Crude Oil Tankers and 2 LR-II size Product Tankers in 2007. Following an impressive growth trajectory, it was recognised as a Maharatna company by the Government of India in 2008.
The company entered into a joint venture arrangement with SAIL to provide shipping-related services importing coking coal in 2010.
The company forayed into inland waterways with a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by Inland & Coastal Shipping Ltd. (ICSL), a 100% subsidiary of SCI, and Inland Waterways Authority of India
