Shiva Cement is a subsidiary of the diversified JSW Group and is involved in cement manufacturing and cement-related products. The Odisha-based company has a production capacity of 4,000 tonnes per day (TPD).
Shiva Cement is a well-entrenched player in the cement value chain. The company supplies cement clinker to JSW Cement Ltd to increase the productivity and efficiency of the JSW Group. Its manufacturing plants act as a main feeder to JSW Cement’s plant in the eastern region.
The company came into existence in 1985 and started commercial operations in 1986. The company was acquired by JSW Cement in 2017. It started working on a Clinkerisation plant in 2020, which completed the plant in 2023 to increase its production capacity.
The company over the years has built a strong foundation of its business with various competitive advantages. It has consolidated its footprint and bolstered its supply chain networks using the experience of parent firm JSW Cement.
JSW Cement is part of $23 billion JSW Group, which has business interests in energy, steel, infrastructure, sports, paints and venture capital.
JSW Cement is one of leading cement manufacturers with a production of around 19 MTPA. It has manufacturing units at Vijayanagar in Karnataka, Salboni in West Bengal, Jajpur in Odisha, Nandyal in Andhra Pradesh, Dolvi in Maharashtra, and Fujairah in the UAE.
Shiva Cement’s market capitalisation stood at over ₹1,000 crore, as of February 16, 2024. Shiva Cement shares have surged over 131% in the last three years.
Shiva Cement business operations
Shiva Cement is involved mainly in cement clinker production and feeds mainly the cement plants of its parent firm JSW Cement. The availability of robust raw material reserves and proximity to the market in the eastern region is one the major strengths of the company. Its manufacturing facility at Sundergarh in Odisha is strategically located at the borders of three eastern states – Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand.
Limestone, minerals, coal and energy are the key raw materials used in cement production. The continued availability of these raw materials is key to the long-term success of the cement industry. Coal is essential for the fast-growing cement industry and Odisha has sufficient reserves of dry fuel.
Shiva Cement’s manufacturing facility is near the raw material sources which supply limestone, clay, laterite, iron fines, slag, gypsum and fly ash. JSW Group acquired Bhushan Power and Steel Ltd, which has a steel manufacturing plant in Jharsuguda, Odisha, within a radius of 80-100 km from Shiva Cement’s manufacturing facility. The steel plant enables it to source input raw materials such as slag and fly ash. The manufacturing facility is also well-connected by road and railway networks.
The road and railway connectivity enables the manufacturing facility to act as a reliable source to the Eastern plants of JSW Cement at Salboni in West Bengal and Jajpur in Odisha giving a competitive advantage to the parent firm. Its new clinker project is a strategic initiative to enable the supply to JSW Cement since the cost of imported clinker is high in the Eastern region of India and the domestically sourced clinker from the Nandyal unit is significantly higher.
The company has increased its production capacity to 4,000 TPD. Its objectives and strategies are aligned with the target of being the market leader in the eastern region. The clinkerisation plant includes a 1.05 MTPA cement grinding unit, a 1.32 MTPA clinkerisation unit (4000 TPD), an 8.9 MW waste heat recovery power plant, a 4 MTPA crushing plants at mines at Khatkurbahal, Odisha, and a dedicated incoming power line of 132 KV.
Shiva Cement is working to increase the production capacity to 3 million tonnes of clinker which is equivalent to 10 million tonnes of slag cement. With easy availability of raw materials Shiva Cement is also looking to introduce new products such as PCC, which is a blend of PSC and PPC types of cement.
