Hyderabad headquartered Rain Industries Limited is a global player in the Carbon black industry. The company is engaged in manufacturing a diverse range of products that are critical raw materials for several industries.
Incorporated on March 15, 1974, Rain Industries is a vertically integrated company with three business segments — carbon, advanced materials and cement. The carbon segments contribute three-fourth of the total revenue of the company.
The company has two subsidiaries, Rain Carbon Inc and Rain Cements Limited. It operates 16 production facilities across three continents -Asia, Europe and North America.
The journey of the company began under the name Rain Calcining Limited with the setting up of a 0.3 million ton per annum capacity calcinated petroleum coke unit in Visakhapatnam in 1998. Rain Calcining Limited merged with Rain Commodities Limited in 2007.
The company was listed in the bourses on March 3, 2008.
Rain Commodities Limited was renamed Rain Industries in July 2013. Rain Industries took over Rutgers, the world’s second largest coal tar pitch producer based in Belgium, the same year.
In 2016, the company completed a green-field coal tar distillation facility in Cherepovets, Russia, by forming a joint venture with Russian steel and mining major PAO Severstal.
The market capitalisation of Rain Industries Limited stood at over ₹5,900 crore as of January 25, 2024. Rain Industries share price has surged over 35% in the last three years.

The company ranks among the world’s leading producers of calcinated petroleum coke, coal tar pitch and other high quality basic and specialty chemicals
It owns and runs 13 carbon plants, five advanced materials manufacturing units and two cement factories. Out of total 16 units, six facilities are located in the United States, two in Germany, one each in Canada, Belgium, Poland and Russia and four in India.
The carbon business arm converts the by-products of oil refining and steel production into high-value carbon-based critical raw materials for a variety of industries including aluminium, graphite, wood preservation, titanium dioxide and carbon black. The carbon business vertical has eight production units with a 2.4 MTPA capacity in North America and Asia and five coal tar distillation plants having a capacity of 1.3 MTPA in Europe and North America.
The advanced materials business division engages in the downstream refining of a portion of the carbon processing output at its production units in Belgium, Canada, Germany and Poland. The products are used as critical raw materials for speciality chemicals, coatings, construction, petroleum and other industries.
The cement segment comprises two integrated plants in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana churning out ordinary Portland cement and pozzolana Portland cement. The products are marketed mainly in South India under the Priya Cement brand.
The company’s major customers include some of the largest companies in the global aluminium, graphite and specialty chemicals industries.
It has a geographically diverse supply-chain network, spread over three continents and uses different modes of transportation, including trains, trucks, containers, burges, pipelines, conveyor belts and ships, as also its own deep-water ship terminals. In CY 22, the company earned 36 % of its revenues from Europe, 35% from North America, 19% from Asia and 10% from other continents. The carbon business contributed 74% to the consolidated revenue, with 19% coming from the advanced chemical vertical and the remaining 7% from cement in CY22.

The company’s consolidated revenue in the financial year ending December 31, 2022, stood at ₹21,011 crore, up 45% compared to ₹14,526.8 crore in CY21. The company’s profit after tax (PAT) in CY22 stood at 1,576.89 crore compared to ₹693.54 crore in CY21. Its adjusted EBITDA in CY23 stood at ₹3,754.5 crore. The company’s earnings per share (EPS) stood at ₹42.77 in CY22 compared to ₹17.25 in CY22.
