In the early trade, the 30-share index, SENSEX, of the BSE was trading at 81,065.77 levels, up 160 points, or 0.20%, while the NSE's NIFTY was trading at 24,770.20, up 71.35 points, or 0.29%.

The benchmark indices, SENSEX and NIFTY, opened on a positive note on Thursday, August 22, amid a host of positive global cues. 

In the early trade, the 30-share index, SENSEX, of the BSE was trading at 81,065.77 levels, up 160 points, or 0.20%, while the NSE's NIFTY was trading at 24,770.20, up 71.35 points, or 0.29%. 

Infosys (up 1%) was the biggest gainer on the SENSEX, followed by Bharti Airtel and Tech Mahindra. On the other hand, PowerGrid (down 1.5%) was the biggest loser. 

STOCKS IN NEWS

Kalayan Jewellers surged 6% amid reports that Highdell Investment will sell a 2.36% stake in the company to the firm's promoter for ₹1,300 crore.

Zomato shares were up 1% while those of Paytm's were trading nearly 3% higher after the companies said that Zomato will acquire the fintech's entertainment ticketing business for ₹2,048 crore.

In the broader market, the BSE MidCap index was up 0.33% at 48,478.76 while the BSE SmallCap index was ruling at 55,608.15, up 0.49%.

In the overnight trade, US stocks advanced amid range-bound trading after investors analysed a steep downward revision in payrolls, and the release of the minutes from the most recent meeting of the Federal Reserve, which cemented expectations for a September rate cut.

All three major stock indexes closed modestly higher, with chips boosting the Nasdaq. The Dow's gains, weighted by financial stocks, were more muted, Reuters reported.
