Benchmark indices SENSEX and NIFTY retreated from record high levels to close flat due to fag-end selling in a volatile session on Tuesday, September 24.

The 50-issue NSE NIFTY breached the 26,000 level for the first time, hitting an all-time intraday high of 26,011.55. The index, however, pared gains to close flat at 25,940, up by 1.35 points or 0.01%, registering its all-time closing high.

As many as 25 of NIFTY50 shares closed in the red while the rest settled with gains led by Tata Steel, Hindalco and PowerGrid.

Gains in metal and pharma shares helped the NIFTY extend gains for the fourth straight day.

Benchmark SENSEX snapped its three-day rising streak and closed lower by 14.57 points, or 0.02%, at 84,914. Losses in HUL, ICICI Bank Kotak Bank and Reliance Industries dragged the index into the negative.

SENSEX moved between a high of 85,163 points and a low of 84,716 points during the day. Due to volatility, the index oscillated between losses and gains.

Broader markets saw a mixed trend as NIFTY Midcap indices advanced up to 0.4% while smallcap indices dropped up to 0.75%.

Among sectoral indices, NIFTY PSU Bank dropped the most by 0.87%, while NIFTY FMCG dropped 0.73%. NIFTY metal soared 2.99%.

Metal shares shine after China fresh stimulus

Metal shares Tata Steel and Hindalco emerged as lead gainers among NIFTY constituents after China announced a fresh stimulus to support its economy. The Chinese central bank announced a host of measures to strengthen the ailing economy.

Tata Steel spurted more than 4% to settle near the day’s high at ₹160.65 per share on the NSE. Hindalco rallied more than 4% to hit a 52-week high of ₹719.7 apiece. The stock closed higher ₹719, up by 4.12%.

Power Grid gained 2.77% to ₹350.6 apiece on optimistic views by experts over the stock.
Tech Mahindra rose by nearly 2% to ₹1,638.75. On Tuesday, the company said that Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group had sold its 2.05% indirect stake in Tech Mahindra on September 19. Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group held a 5.03% stake in Tech Mahindra earlier.
Adani Enterprises rose by 1.86% to ₹3,100.45 per share. Among other NIFTY stocks, HCL Tech, ONGC, Mahindra and Mahindra, and Bajaj Auto gained up to 1.5% at the close.

SBI Life, Hindustan Unilever major losers

SBI Life was the biggest loser among NIFTY shares, falling by 2.78% to ₹1866.7 apiece on the NSE.
FMCG major Hindustan Unilever dropped 2.51% to ₹2,952.65 amid losses in consumer durables and FMCG shares.
Grasim Industries declined 1.61% to ₹2,624 after an uptick in crude oil prices. Ultratech Cement dropped 1.51%, while Shriram Finance declined 1.31%.
