Shares of Tata Motors continued to bleed on Friday, February 28, amid broad-based selling.

The scrip closed at ₹620.70 apiece on NSE, falling 4.29%. During the intraday trade, the auto major tumbled 2.8% to ₹630.40 on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). Shares of the firm had touched its 52-week low of ₹618.45 per share.

Market investors remained worried about Tata Motors after its subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover maker (JLR) witnessed a fall in margins in the October-December quarter. Further, the demand outlook in key markets like China and Europe remained weak. This was the main reason for Tata Motors’ poor performance in Q3 FY25.

Tata Motors consolidated net profit in the December quarter dropped 22% to ₹5,451 crore as against ₹7,025 crore in the same quarter last year.

Its total revenue from operations rose nearly 3% to ₹1,13,575 crore.

The possibility of Tesla's entry into the Indian automobile market has also added to the negative sentiment for Tata Motors shares. Media reports suggest that the government may reduce import duties on electric vehicles, potentially facilitating Tesla's entry into the Indian market. This development has raised concerns about heightened competition.

Tata Motors’ sales had also declined last month. The automaker reported a 6.76% decline in total sales (domestic & international market) at 80,304 units in January 2025 as compared to 86,125 units in the same month last year.

Total domestic sales were down 7.26% at 78,159 units in January 2025 as against 84,276 units in January 2024.

Total passenger vehicle (PV) sales, including EVs, were 48,316 units in January 2025 compared to 54,033 units in the year-ago month, down 11%. Similarly, domestic PV sales, including EVs, were down 10% at 48,076 units in January 2025 as against 53,633 units in January 2024.

Its total commercial vehicle (CV) sales in January 2025 were marginally down by 0.3% at 31,988 units as against 32,092 units in the same period last year.

Stock price

Shares of Tata Motors fell for the ninth consecutive session on Friday. The scrip is trading at its 52-week low during the intraday trade.

The stock declined almost 12% in one month and 34.2% year-on-year. Its market capitalisation stood at ₹2.32 lakh crore.

However, in the last five trading sessions, Tata Motors shares have tanked over 6%.
