NIFTY50, SENSEX edge higher on gains in banking, FMCG shares: Check top gainers and losers

Benchmark SENSEX rallied nearly 148 points, while NIFTY advanced for the sixth straight day to settle above 24,800 on Thursday, August 22. Gains in banking, FMCG, and metal shares helped the benchmark indices close higher.

NIFTY50 closed higher by 41.3 points, or 0.17%, at 24,811.5, marking its sixth straight day of gains. As many as 27 of its constituents ended in green and 23 in red. The index moved in a narrow range of 24,784.45 to 24,867.35 during the day.

SENSEX advanced 147.89 points, or 0.14%, to settle at 81,053.19, extending gains for the third day.

Stock markets moved in range ahead of key central bankers' meetings at Jackson Hole. Weak US jobs data also raised hopes for a September rate cut by the US Federal Reserve.

Among the sectoral indices, pharma, oil and gas, auto, and IT closed lower. On the other hand, the rally in the benchmark index was aided by the gains in bank, FMCG, metal, realty and telecom stocks. The indices gained 0.5-1.4%.

Grasim, Tata Consumer, Bharti Airtel top gainers

Grasim Industries gained the most among NIFTY shares by rising 2.65% at close. The stock hit a high of ₹2,772.95 before settling at ₹2,756 per share as the company expects its all six paint plants to be operational by fiscal-end.
Tata Consumer was the second biggest gainer, rising by 2.42% to settle near the day's high at ₹1,206 apiece on the NSE. The stock hit a high of 1,209.45 apiece intra-day after successfully raising ₹3,000 crore through a rights issue.
Bharti Airtel advanced 1.6% to ₹1,486.9 after hitting a high of ₹1,499.9 apiece. Apollo Hospital gained 1.37% to close at ₹6,844.95 while Tata Steel also rose by 1.37% to settle at ₹154 apiece.

ICICI Bank, Titan and Hero MotoCorp also gained more than 1%.

Wipro, NTPC among top losers

On the other hand, Wipro dropped the most by 1.37% to settle near the day's low at ₹519.15 apiece. NTPC was the second biggest loser falling by 1.25% to ₹403.85 apiece.
Tata Motors declined by 1.22% to ₹1,072 after moving in a range of ₹1,094.75 to ₹1,067.5 apiece.
M&M also declined by 1.21% to ₹2,736, while Dr Reddy’s Labs fell 1.17% to ₹6,979.9 apiece at the close.
