Financial stocks gained on hopes RBI will cut the cash reserve ratio (CRR) in its upcoming policy decision due Thursday.
CRR is a certain portion/percentage of a bank's deposits that must be kept as reserves with the central bank (RBI, in the case of India).
A potential slashing of the CRR could provide margin support for lenders, Reuters reported, citing Citi analysts.
Of 50 stocks, 30 declined and the rest 20 gained. The top five gainers on the index were HDFC Life, HDFC Bank, Bajaj Finserv, Apollo Hospitals, and NTPC.
Shares of the company rallied as the company's board of directors approved the incorporation of a healthcare subsidiary that will undertake healthcare and allied services. The required approvals will be taken by the entity as and when required.
The stock ended at ₹1,995 on the BSE, up 3.51%.
As many as 4,070 stocks traded on the BSE. Out of this, 2,384 scrips gained, and 1,582 stocks declined while 104 scrips remained unchanged.
A total of 255 stocks hit their 52-week high levels while 12 stocks touched their 52-week lows.
Further, a total of 448 stocks hit their upper circuit limits and 185 touched their lower circuit limits on the BSE.
The BSE MidCap index ended at 47,372.25 levels, up 390 points, or 0.83%, while the BSE SmallCap index settled at 56,617.46, up 380 points, or 0.68%.
Realty stocks were the biggest gainers on the BSE, followed by financial services counters.
The BSE Realty index ended at 8,416.11, up 176 points, or 2.13%.
On the other hand, auto stocks were the top losers. The BSE Auto index ended at 53,355.12, down 0.67%.
