What is a futures contract?

A futures contract is like a promise to buy or sell an asset (like stocks or commodities) at a set price on a specific future date. It's a way to avoid losses arising due to unexpected changes in prices. For example, if you want to buy Stock X at 100 after a month, you can enter into a futures contract to buy it at that price even if it goes up to 110 or 120 later. On the other hand, if the price falls to, say ₹80, you’ll have to pay the agreed-upon price, i.e. ₹100.

There are two kinds of people who enter into futures contracts: those trying to protect themselves from price changes (hedgers) and those trying to make a profit from future price changes (speculators).
