The term BTST (buy today sell tomorrow) trading strategy is common among swing traders. BTST trade means buy today, sell tomorrow. If you actively participate in share market trading, you might have heard the term BTST. Unlike Intraday trading, which involves buying and selling of shares for one trading session, BTST allows traders to buy today and sell in the next trading session.
In India, it is usually seen, in the second half of the trading session, the market witnessed high volatility. It can be due to multiple factors but, one most important reason is, increasing activity of FII (Foreign Institutional Investors). The rise in volatility brings up the opportunity for BTST trading.
BTST trading means, buying shares in today's trading session and selling them on the next session even before the actual delivery. In India, when you buy shares in the stock market, it takes T+1 day to reflect in your demat account.
In regular trade, you can’t take the benefit, if the price rises on the next day. But if your broker allows BTST trading service, you can take advantage of upward price swing with receiving delivery of the stocks. At Upstox, we offer BTST trading, so that you can never miss a good trading setup.
BTST Trading example: You bought 100 shares of ABC company today at price of ₹200 per share and sold them at ₹220 on the next trading session. You made a quick profit of ₹2000 even before you received the delivery of shares in your demat account.
Identifying BTST trading setup in the live market is not easy. It takes a deep understanding of technical analysis and price action. However, the most common way to identify a BTST trading opportunity is by following the trend.
You might have heard the term, trend is friend. It means if you prefer to take the trade in the direction of a trend, the probability of winning increases. For BTST trading, you are required to scan those shares which have performed well in the last two or three sessions. To filter further, choose those stocks which are near to 52-week-high.
If you see any stock breaking out of its 52-week-high after the consolidation. Then it can be treated as a good BTST trading setup.
Buy today, sell tomorrow, BTST can be very rewarding for some who are skilled in reading candlesticks and chart patterns. Here are a few benefits of BTST trading.
BTST trading allows you to make quick gains by taking advantage of overnight price changes. However, trade can go in the opposite direction also.
BTST involves selling your shares on the next day, helping you to avoid cost tied with holding stocks overnight.
BTST helps in capitalising the short-term price movements. You choose not to commit to long term trades.
BTST traders often adapt the changes in the market environment quickly as compared to other forms of traders.
In the stock market, risk is inherent. BTST trading also carries risk of financial and emotional loss. If the price of the purchased stock did not rise on the next trading session, you need to exit the trade. It's not necessary that the stock price will rise only, it can fall too. So, BTST traders should prepare accordingly before entering any trade.
Also, every trade carries a cost such as brokerage, STT, transaction charges, GST etc. It's better to evaluate breakeven before placing BTST trade.
BTST trading is successful for those who have a basic understanding of markets and know technical analysis. BTST allows traders to profit from short-term price movements. However, it's important to understand, there is an inherent risk in the market and risk management is key to success in the long run.
