CPSE ETF About

About Central Public Sector Enterprises Exchange Traded Fund

  • Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSE) ETF is an exchange-traded fund launched by the Government of India. It was created to help the government divest its stakes in certain public sector enterprises (PSEs).
  • The CPSE ETF tracks the Nifty CPSE Index, which includes the largest public sector companies (PSEs) by market capitalisation that are listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE).
  • CPSE ETF was launched on March 28, 2014.
  • The assets under management (AUM) of the ETF stood at ₹46,793.08 crore as of July 31, 2024.
  • The risk profile of the CPSE ETF is very high.
  • The ETF units are listed on NSE and BSE and investors can invest by buying units through a broker. All the units can be bought by retail investors directly from the demat account at market price during each session

Investment Objective & Benchmark

  • The primary objective of the CPSE ETF is to provide investors with exposure to a diversified portfolio of government-owned companies. It's also a tool for the government to meet its divestment targets.
  • The ETF consists of bonds issued by Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs).
  • It is benchmarked against the Nifty CPSE Index.
  • The ETF is composed of stocks from government-owned companies in various sectors such as energy, finance and coal.
  • The companies in the Nifty CPSE Index are selected based on factors like market capitalisation, government holding and liquidity. They are also required to have paid dividends consistently over the last three years.
  • The CPSE ETF has a reputation for high dividend yields, as many of the constituent companies are known for paying regular dividends.
  • The CPSE ETF has seen multiple tranches of fund offerings in the past few years, providing retail and institutional investors opportunities to invest in these government-owned companies. The government has used these tranches to raise significant capital as part of its disinvestment strategy.
  • Investors can gain exposure to a basket of stocks in the PSE segment, which reduces the risk associated with individual stocks.
