FAQs

What is Tick-by-Tick (TBT) Data in the share market?

accordion
Tick-by-Tick is a type of data feed that records every market event including:
  • Any buyer who places or cancels a bid
  • Any seller who places or cancels an ask
  • Any trade that gets matched (the price at which a trade gets executed, also known as the Last Traded Price [LTP])
Tick-by-Tick Data offers a full order book of all trades at the Exchange. As the data is huge, a rack in the Exchange needs to be purchased to ensure the data is received in a timely manner (avoiding latency issue). This guarantees in not missing even a single data point when Tick-by-Tick data is used.

How can I use Tick-by-Tick Data?

accordion
You can access Tick-by-Tick Data by subscribing to market data providers, financial APIs, advanced trading software or brokerage platforms like Upstox

Are there any costs associated with accessing Tick-by-Tick (TBT) Data?

accordion
Accessing Tick-by-Tick Data is expensive, but at Upstox, we're offering it to you completely FREE of charge
Logistics and setup to procure Tick-by-Tick Data is expensive. The broker needs to have infrastructure colocated with each exchange. The broker has to invest in data lines that are 100x bigger than what is required for Snapshot Data
To stream TBT to the end consumer, the internet costs for brokers are also much more expensive.
Processing TBT Data is not feasible. Given the massive size of data that gets pushed out of the exchange, it's not feasible to send each and every packet from the exchange to the customer in real time. Sending all this data over the internet is extremely unreliable. To consume TBT in its entirety the broker has to also be colocated in the exchange

Everything about Tick-by-Tick data

Usually, brokers provide retail traders with Snapshot market data from the exchange. But this provides an incomplete view of the market as it is only fetched in packets of five. In contrast, TBT or Tick-by-Tick data streams the entire exchange order book, capturing every single transaction in real time. This ensures unparalleled accuracy and complete market visibility, leaving no information gaps.

That's why Tick-by-Tick trading provides you with an edge compared to those who use Snapshot data. It ensures your indicators are mapped correctly, pattern recognition is precise, and price triggers are reliable. So far, tick trading has typically been used by high-frequency trading desks, proprietary traders and algo traders. For them, even the smallest price discrepancy can make a difference worth lakhs. To level the playing field, Upstox is enabling you to enjoy Tick-by-Tick trading for free. With TBT data, you gain the same edge that the pros have and your trading strategies are more accurate.
