Initially, it was to celebrate the festival and to bring traders and investors together on an auspicious note. Over time, the practice gained popularity, and other exchanges such as the National Stock Exchange (NSE) also began observing muhurat trading.

Muhurat trading is governed by the same rules and regulations as regular trading. The trading session is for one hour and is conducted in the evening on Diwali. During this time, the market opens for trading in equities, derivatives, and currency derivatives.
