A November 8 circular stated that the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the BSE (formerly Bombay Stock Exchange) will not be operational on the voting day.
The Maharashtra Assembly elections will be conducted in a single phase on November 20, with 4,136 contestants over 288 seats, the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced. The votes will be counted on Saturday, November 23.
The market, which is usually open for trading from Monday to Friday between 9.15 a.m. and 3:30 p.m, will be closed on Wednesday. This marks the third stock market holiday in November after Diwali and Gurpurab.
December 25 will be the last market holiday for the calendar year 2024.
While the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will remain closed for the morning session, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., it will open for trading during the evening session from 5 p.m. to 11:55 p.m.
For select agricultural stocks, the MCX will be open till 9 p.m.
Further, in the light of the elections, the date for the expiry of metal index futures contract (MCXMETLDEX) was advanced from November 20 to November 19, MCX said in a circular.
On the eve of the Maharashtra elections, banks in Belapur, Nagpur and Mumbai will have a holiday tomorrow.
As of 11:29 am, Nifty50 was trading at 23,756.35, up 302.55 points or 1.29%. The S&P BSE Sensex was at 78,379.06 levels, up 1.34% or 1,040.05 bp.
Asian markets were on the rise on Tuesday as compared to the US bond yields and the dollar, which lagged as traders waited for Donald Trump’s cabinet selection and sought to gauge the outlook for Federal Reserve easing.
In the US, tech stocks were in the green, tracking Wall Street's recovery from last week's sharp losses.
