The top five gainers on the index were Wipro, Infosys, TCS, Sun Pharma, and Tech Mahindra.
Shares of private life insurer ICICI Prudential Life Insurance declined 10% on Wednesday, a day after the company reported its financial results for the latest December quarter.
The stock was down 9.61% to ₹574.45 apiece on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) at 9:31 am.
In the quarter under review, the net premium income (NPI) surged 23.48% to ₹12,261 crore, compared to ₹9,929 crore in the same quarter a year ago.
The Cyient DLM stock dived as much as 12.5% on the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) to hit a 52-week low of ₹521.50.
On Tuesday, Cyient reported that its revenue grew 38% year-on-year to ₹444 crore in the December quarter. However, profit after tax was down 41.7% YoY to ₹10.8 crore during the quarter due to higher expenses.
The BSE MidCap index was trading at 42,682.71, down 484.68 points, or 1.12% while the BSE SmallCap index was trading at 50,913.58, down 801.04 points, or 1.55%.
Barring technology stocks, all sectoral indices were trading with losses.
The BSE Information Technology index was trading at 41,606.28, up 270.56 points, or 0.65%.
On the other hand, realty stocks were the top losers.
Global stocks gained on Wednesday as a flurry of new policies from US President Donald Trump combined with robust corporate earnings to bolster investor optimism, while tariff uncertainty kept the dollar near two-week lows.
Japan's Nikkei jumped 1.4%, tracking broad gains on Wall Street. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 0.1% as falls in Chinese stocks offset broad gains in Taiwan and South Korea.
Chinese blue chips fell 1.2%, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng index lost 1.5%.
