A healthy buying in financials, metals, and realty stocks helped improve the overall market trend. At close, the S&P BSE SENSEX stood at 78,540.17, up 498.58 points, or 0.64%, while the broader NIFTY50 index settled at 23,753.45, up 165.95, or 0.7%.

Stock market today: After falling for five straight sessions, bulls made a notable comeback on Monday, December 23, and were successful in holding on to gains till the end.

A healthy buying in financials, metals, and realty stocks helped improve the overall market trend.

At close, the S&P BSE SENSEX stood at 78,540.17, up 498.58 points, or 0.64%, while the broader NIFTY50 index settled at 23,753.45, up 165.95, or 0.7%.

Stocks gained on the back of positive global cues, given the lower-than-expected US inflation data.

Here is a look at the key developments of today's session.

Top gainers and losers of the NIFTY50 index

As many as 32 out of 50 stocks on the NIFTY50 index ended in the green and the remaining 18 in the red.

The top five gainers were JSW Steel, ITC Ltd, Hindalco, Trent, and HDFC Bank.

The top losers were Hero MotoCorp, Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL), HCLTech, HDFC Life, and Bajaj Finserv.

As regards SENSEX, 21 stocks ended in positive territory, and the rest nine in the red.

The biggest contributors to the index's gains were HDFC Bank, RIL, ITC Ltd, and ICICI Bank.

Market Statistics

As many as 4,218 stocks traded on the BSE. Out of this, 2,452 stocks declined, 1,636 advanced, and 130 stocks remained unchanged.

A total of 212 stocks hit their 52-week highs while 93 stocks touched their 52-week lows.

Further, five stocks hit their upper circuit limits, and three hit their lower circuits.

Buzzing Stocks

Intellect Design Arena: Shares of Intellect Design Arena ended more than 17.4% higher at ₹962.55 apiece on the BSE. Volumes spurted more than 10x the one-month average, testing levels last seen in October, as per news reports.

The stock jumped as, according to analysts, the company has been aggressively growing its portfolio in the IT software industry, which has boosted investor sentiment.

Intellect Design Arena has recently also launched a new enterprise AI platform, Purple Fabric.

ITC Ltd: Shares of ITC Ltd ended over 2% higher at ₹474.20 apiece on the BSE. Last week, the diversified conglomerate announced the record date for the demerger of its hotel business. The company has fixed January 6, 2025, as the record date for the demerger of its hotel business.

In an exchange filing on Tuesday, the company said that January 1, 2025, will be the appointed and effective date for the demerger.

Metal stocks such as JSW Steel, Tata Steel, SAIL, and Jindal Steel and Power shares rallied as, according to a government notification, India has initiated a probe into an alleged increase in imports of certain steel flat products into the country following a complaint from the Indian Steel Association.

The BSE MidCap index ended at 46,274.31, up 47.81 points, or 0.10%, while the BSE SmallCap index settled at 54,817.91, down 331.31 points, or 0.60%.

Apart from metals, banks, financial services, and realty stocks, too, ended with impressive gains.

The BSE REALTY index ended at 8,372.02, up 1.39%.
