“Grubgate” has been echoing the halls and meeting rooms of Meta as the tech giant recently fired about two dozen or so employees involved in the controversy.

The tech giant terminated approximately two dozen employees for misusing $25 Grubhub meal credits.

The grubhub credits are a perk given by the company to people working in locations where free meals are not provided by cafeterias, or to those employees who are working late hours and need food delivered to the office, reported Business Insider.
Reportedly, the $25 meal credits were instead used to purchase non-food items such as wine glasses, laundry detergents, and acne cream, a person familiar with the situation told Business Insider.
The roughly two-dozen employees were fired for a continuous pattern of abusing the meal credit system.

Blind, an anonymous workplace forum platform that requires a verified company email to gain entry to a designated channel, has been witnessing a flurry of conversations and reactions between the employees discussing the “grubgate” controversy.

The reactions of employees on Blind to the recent terminations have ranged from sympathy on one end of the spectrum to those who felt that it was deserved on the other end.

A poll was posted on the channel asking employees whether they were “Safe from Grubgate" or "Affected by Grubgate", as seen by Business Insider. The poll is indicative of a state of widespread concern spreading amongst the employees.

“This action instils fear in employees. Anyone can violate a policy by mistake. It’s like taking away your driving licence because you were going 55 instead of 50. I challenge anyone to say that they know ALL the policies this company has,” one employee said while expressing their concern and unease over the situation.

On the contrary, another employee was less sympathetic, stating, “it’s not weird. They violated a ‘follow this rule, or you will be terminated’ policy, and they were terminated. There is nothing to worry about unless you are also violating company policies.”

Some employees suggested that the Grubhub linked terminations might be linked to broader organisational changes that Meta has undertaken. The tech giant had recently reorganised several key divisions which resulted in two rounds of layoffs.

"These fools are so lucky… at least they know WHY they got laid off. Imagine having to wonder for the rest of your life where you went wrong," one person said.
