Investors check into hotel stocks

As per a new industry report, Indian hotel industry continues to outperform despite inflation woes. Major hospitality stocks like Indian Hotels, Lemon Tree, and Chalet Hotels seem to have caught investors attention, rising in the range of 28-32% since April 2022.

In September, the sector witnessed a 3% rise in occupancy rates, while average room rates rose by ₹200 to nearly ₹6,000 as compared to the previous month. But what’s driving the hospitality industry to new highs? Let's explore.

As per market experts, the hospitality industry is witnessing a strong demand because of a pick-up in leisure travel after the pandemic. Further, a steady economic recovery has led to a rise in business travel, including meetings, conferences and exhibitions.

Upbeat domestic growth has led to high demand for hotel rooms, outstripping the supply. For instance, room demand increased by over 60% year-on-year as of July 2022, while room addition increased by only around 2%. As a result, the industry is getting back the pricing power, which can boost the future revenue and profitability.

Some industry reports suggest that this trend is here to stay for the next 6-7 years as demand will continue to grow in double digits, while supply will grow at 3-4% annually. In addition, the ongoing festive season followed by the wedding season will keep the demand high.
