Migrating to UPS is optional for Central Government employees currently covered under NPS. The new scheme promises assured payouts on retirement, which is currently not available under NPS.
"The Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) is introduced by the Central Government as an option under the National Pension System (NPS) for Central Government employees with effect from 1st April 2025. The UPS provides assured payout based on the prescribed conditions," the Government said.
The process to migrate from NPS to UPS is simple. After visiting the CRA portal mentioned above, employees need to select "Migrate to UPS" under the "Quick Links for Subscribers" option on the page. Following this, they can complete the further process by providing their Permanent Retirement Account Number (PRAN) and date of birth.
New employees can use the CRA portal to register for UPS.
Following Central Government employees can switch to NPS:
An existing Central Government employee in service as of 1 April 2025, who are covered under NPS
Newly recruited Central Government employees joining service on or after 1 April 2025.
Central Government employees, who were covered under NPS, retired on or before 31st March 2025 and who meet the following conditions:
