What is an ETF in the stock market? How are ETFs different from Index funds?

An exchange-traded fund (ETF) is a basket of pooled investment securities that can be traded like individual stocks on a stock exchange. ETFs can be organised or designed to meet different investment objectives and strategies. They can track anything ranging from the price of a commodity to a diverse range of securities. Investors prefer ETFs for varied reasons like generating income, speculation, and protecting the risk factor in a portfolio.

In India, ETFs are regulated by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). ETFs are placed under regulatory boards to ensure they meet certain standards and disclosures and protect investors.

Key advantages of ETFs

Investors prefer ETFs for many of their benefits. Some of the key advantages of ETFs are:

Trading Flexibility: ETFs provide flexibility to traders compared to mutual funds. ETFs can be bought and sold at any time during the trading session. ETFs’ share prices vary throughout the day depending on the dynamic intraday value of the underlying assets in the fund. Investors find it easy to move money between stocks, bonds, or commodities during the intraday trading of ETF shares.
Portfolio diversification and risk management: ETF shares provide investors access to various sectors with easy exposure to any preferred segment. ETFs can be traded on almost every major asset class, commodity, and global currency.
Lower operating cost: The operating expense of ETFs is low because the client service-related expenses are passed on to the brokerage firms.
Tax advantage: ETFs offer more tax advantages compared to mutual funds. Unlike Mutual Funds, ETFs have lower capital gains and are payable only in case of a sale.
