Budget 2024: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday presented her seventh Budget in Lok Sabha and made several announcements, including the abolition of the angel tax, increase in the standard deduction and revision of slabs in the new tax regime.

₹6.22 lakh crore allocated to Defence Ministry
In the Union Budget of Financial Year (FY) 2024-25, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has been allocated ₹6,21,940.85 crore, the highest among the Ministries. While maintaining the allocation made to MoD during the interim budget, the Government has made an additional allocation of ₹400 crore on innovation in defence through the Acing Development of Innovative Technologies with iDEX (ADITI) scheme.

Govt wants to simplify the approach to taxation: Sitharaman on 12.5% tax on long-term capital gains
On 12.5% tax on long-term capital gains, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in a post-Budget press conference, said that the government wants to simplify the approach to taxation.
"The average taxation has actually come down when we say it is 12.5%. We have worked out for each of the different asset classes...The point that we brought it down from below the average to 12.5% encourages investment in the markets," she added.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday proposed a simpler tax regime for foreign shipping firms operating domestic cruises in India, with the aim of boosting cruise tourism in India.
She said ownership, leasing, and flagging reforms will be implemented to improve the Indian shipping industry's share and generate more employment.
"To give a fillip to this employment generating industry, I am proposing a simpler tax regime for foreign shipping companies operating domestic cruises in the country," she said.

Govt to undertake comprehensive review of Income Tax Act: Sitharaman
The government on Tuesday announced that it will undertake a comprehensive review of the Income Tax (IT) Act to make it easy to read.
Presenting the Union Budget for 2024-25, Sitharaman also said the government will come out with a standard operating procedure (SoP) for TDS defaults and simplify and rationalise the compounding of such offences.
She added that two tax exemption regimes for charitable trusts will be merged into one.
Also, 58% of corporate tax has come from a simplified tax regime in FY23.
More than two-thirds of individuals availed of the new income tax regime, Sitharaman said in the Lok Sabha.
The FM further announced that DPI apps will be developed for credit, e-commerce, education, health, law, MSME service delivery, and urban governance.

Capital gains exemption limit on certain financial assets to be hiked to ₹1.25 lakh/yr: FM
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday said the government intends to raise capital gains exemption limit on certain financial assets to ₹1.25 lakh per year for middle and upper middle class.
Presenting the Budget 2024, she announced a hike in STT (securities transaction tax) on futures and options (F&O) securities by 0.02 per cent and 0.1 per cent.
Income receipt on share buyback will be taxed in the hands of recipients, Sitharaman added.
To reduce tax litigation, the finance minister said the government is planning the Vivad Se Vishwas Scheme 2024.
