SUMMARY
The service, initially complimentary, enables passengers to browse, work, and connect on Wi-Fi-enabled devices during flights.
Following a successful international pilot program, Air India plans to expand this feature to more aircraft in its fleet.
Air India on Wednesday announced the launch of Wi-Fi internet connectivity services on board select domestic and international flights, becoming the first airline in India to offer in-flight Wi-Fi on domestic routes.
The service, available on Airbus A350, Boeing 787-9, and select Airbus A321neo aircraft, allows travellers to browse the internet, use social media, send messages, and work during their flights.
"Connectivity is now an integral part of modern travel," said Rajesh Dogra, Chief Customer Experience Officer, Air India. "For some, it is about the convenience and comfort of real-time sharing, while for others, it is about greater productivity and efficiency. Whatever one’s purpose, we are confident our guests will appreciate the option of connecting to the web and enjoying the new Air India experience."
The service can be accessed on Wi-Fi-enabled devices such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones with iOS or Android operating systems. Passengers can connect multiple devices simultaneously when the aircraft is above 10,000 feet.
Initially available as a complimentary service, the Wi-Fi rollout on domestic routes follows a pilot programme conducted on international routes, including flights to New York, London, Paris, and Singapore.
Air India plans to gradually extend the service to other aircraft in its fleet.
To connect, passengers can enable Wi-Fi on their devices, select the ‘Air India Wi-Fi’ network, and log in with their booking details.
The now-defunct Jet Airways offered a wireless in-flight entertainment (IFE) service called JetScreen that allowed passengers to stream content directly to their Wi-Fi-enabled devices.
