Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) is a government housing scheme designed to provide affordable permanent houses to the economically weaker urban and rural populations.
PM Awas Yojana is divided into two categories: PMAY-Urban for applicants residing in urban areas and PMAY-Gramin for those living in rural areas.
To qualify for the PMAY, the candidate must not own a pucca, i.e., permanent house, anywhere in India and must belong to a low-income group, along with meeting other eligibility criteria.
Applicants can apply for the PM Awas Yojana online or offline, depending on their preference.
India is experiencing a significant housing shortage, especially among people belonging to EWS (Economically Weaker Section), Medium and Low-Income groups. The affordable housing shortage in urban areas is currently estimated at 9.4 million units and is expected to reach 30 million by 2030, according to a report by Knight Frank.
To combat the housing shortage and offer legal and affordable housing to economically weaker sections of society, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) was introduced by the Government of India.
Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana is a housing scheme introduced by the Government of India to provide affordable and permanent housing to economically weaker sections of the population in India. The scheme offers financial assistance, subsidised lower interest rates on home loans and aims to facilitate the construction of 20 million affordable houses across the country.
The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana has two components:
PMAY-U aims to provide affordable housing to eligible families who do not have a pucca house in urban areas. Houses constructed under PMAY-U are equipped with basic amenities such as water supply, kitchen, electricity and toilet.
The scheme promotes women’s ownership by providing houses or land in the name of the female head of the household or jointly with other family members. It is specifically designed for slum dwellers and those belonging to EWS, MIG, and LIG categories. PMAY-U targets to house around 1 crore eligible urban families by 2029.
PMAY-G aims to provide pucca houses to all households living in kutcha houses or homeless people in rural areas. The cost of constructing houses will be shared between the Central and State Governments in the ratio of 60:40 in flat lands and 90:10 in hilly and North Eastern states, including the Himalayan region.
The Union Cabinet has approved the continuation of the PMAY-G with the objective of providing assistance for constructing 2 crore pucca houses with basic amenities from April 2024 to March 2029.
