Market Wrap, July 30: SENSEX up 273 pts, NIFTY50 ends at 24,317; M&M, Eicher Motors among top gainers

The Indian stock market ended higher on Thursday, July 30, after a largely range-bound session, supported by gains in IT and auto stocks and foreign fund inflows. The investors, however, remained watchful about the elevated crude oil prices.

At close, the S&P BSE SENSEX stood at the 77,928.15 level, up 273.55 points, or 0.035%, while the NSE NIFTY50 rose 66.95 points, or 0.28%, to settle at 24,317.15.

In the international markets, Brent oil futures for September delivery rose nearly 2% to trade at $92.33 per barrel.

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) declared its April-to-June quarter earnings report for the financial year 2026-27, where the firm recorded strong growth in Q1 net profit and revenues due to healthy auto sales support in the period.

According to exchange data, on Wednesday, the foreign institutional investors (FIIs) purchased shares worth ₹2,981.87 crore, while the domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought equities worth ₹998.02 crore on a net basis.

Globally, Asian markets ended on a mixed note as investors turned cautious after the US Federal Reserve decided to keep interest rates on hold while crude oil was hovering around $86 per barrel as fighting in the Middle East escalated.

Japan's Nikkei rose 0.77%, China's Shanghai declined 0.63%, South Korea's KOSPI advanced 1.25% and Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 0.26%.

Market statistics

As many as 3,419 stocks traded on the NSE on Thursday. Out of these, 1,326 advanced and 1,975 stocks declined, while 118 scrips remained unchanged.

This indicated that the market breadth was in favour of declines.

A total of 86 stocks hit their 52-week highs, while 52 stocks touched their one-year lows. Besides, 64 stocks hit their upper circuit limits, and 92 touched their lower circuit bands on Thursday.

The market capitalisation of NSE-listed firms stood at ₹481.89 lakh crore at the close of the session.

India VIX, the volatility gauge, stood at 12.16 levels, rising 1.22%.

The broader market closed the session negative, underperforming the main equity benchmark indices. The Nifty Midcap 100 fell 0.35% to settle at 62,641.75, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 slipped 0.56% to end at the 19,254.45 level.

Sectoral watch

On the sectoral front, NIFTY Realty (2.06%), NIFTY Private Bank (-0.18%), NIFTY Pharma (-0.1%) and NIFTY FMCG (-0.01%) were among losers.   

NIFTY Auto was the top sectoral gainer, climbing 1.63%, followed by NIFTY Oil & Gas (0.46%), NIFTY Consumer Durables (0.33%), NIFTY Media (0.29%) and NIFTY IT (0.23%).

Top gainers and losers

On the NIFTY50 index, 25 stocks advanced while 25 declined on Thursday.

Mahindra & Mahindra was the most contributing stock, gaining 2.26%. Coal India (1.79%), Eicher Motors (1.67%), Maruti Suzuki India (1.66%) and Tata Motors PV (1.55%) were the other top gainers.

On the flip side, Adani Ports (-3.38%), HDFC Life Insurance (-2.09%), Shriram Finance (-1.5%), SBI Life Insurance (-1.47%), Jio Financial Services (-1.13%), and InterGlobe Aviation (-1.11%) were top losers on the 50-share index.
