The Indian benchmark indices, SENSEX and NIFTY50, closed mixed on Thursday, August 13. While the NIFTY50 ended in negative territory for the third consecutive session, the SENSEX closed in the green zone.
The trading session saw heightened volatility due to the weekly expiry of SENSEX futures and options.
Furthermore, Asian markets ended mixed as United States retail inflation data came in line with expectations and dampened hopes of a rate hike by the Federal Reserve going ahead.
On August 13, the SENSEX advanced by 113.61 points or 0.15% to close at 78,079.96. Meanwhile, the NIFTY50 closed lower by 40.10 points or 0.16% at 24,395.85.
The 50-share NIFTY index was dragged down by selling in Hindalco Industries, which closed 2.99% lower.
It was followed by ICICI Bank (-1.74%), UltraTech Cement (-1.56%), Grasim Industries (-1.54%) and SBI Life Insurance Company (-0.98%), which were among the top losers.
On the other hand, the top gainers included Tata Consumer Products (2.69%), Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (1.92%), NTPC (1.41%), Hindustan Unilever (1.41%) and Shriram Finance (1.35%).
NSE’s midcap gauge, the NIFTY Midcap 100, gained by 97.15 points, or 0.15%, to close at 64,121.55 on Thursday.
The index was supported by Astral, which ended 8.74% higher, after the company reported robust earnings for the first quarter of the 2026-27 financial year (Q1 FY27).
It reported a 47.97% year-on-year (YoY) growth in its consolidated net profit to ₹120 crore during the quarter under review, compared to ₹81.1 crore in the April-June quarter of the 2025-26 fiscal year (Q1 FY26), according to a regulatory filing dated August 12.
The other top winners were Container Corporation of India (4.22%), APL Apollo Tubes (3.36%), Radico Khaitan (3.14%) and Kalyan Jewellers India (2.80%).
On the flip side, the top laggards included Page Industries (-4.64%), National Aluminium Company (-4.64%), Steel Authority of India (-3.06%), SBI Cards and Payment Services (-2.38%) and GE Vernova T&D India (-2.31%).
The stock of SBI Cards and Payment Services declined after global index services provider MSCI on Thursday said that it will be adding four Indian companies to its ‘Global Standard Index’ while removing three firms as part of the August 2026 review.
SBI Cards and Payment Services is among the three companies that will be removed from the MSCI index in the upcoming period, effective after the market close of August 31, 2026, and from September 1, 2026.
The NIFTY Smallcap 100 ended at 19,875.10, up by 53.45 points or 0.27% on August 13.
Newgen Software Technologies (7.35%), Godawari Power & Ispat (6.29%), Sarda Energy & Minerals (5.99%), Natco Pharma (4.23%) and IFCI Ltd (4.09%) were among the top gainers.
On the contrary, the top losers were Physicswallah (-5.08%), Force Motors (-3.86%), City Union Bank (-3.40%), Ather Energy (-2.90%) and Five-Star Business Finance (-2.62%).
