Maha Kumbh Mela, the world’s largest religious congregation, will be held from January 13 to February 26 this year at Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh. The most important spiritual gathering for Hindus, which falls every 12 years, is held at the confluence of the sacred Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati rivers, known as Sangam.
More than 40 crore pilgrims and visitors from across the globe are expected to visit the historical city, which holds sacred importance for Hindus worldwide. The massive gathering of visitors from across the world is also expected to boost local businesses while bringing enormous opportunities for leading players across industries, especially travel, hospitality, and transport.
The UP government allocated around ₹2,500 crore in its last budget for various projects undertaken as part of the preparations for the Mahakumbh Mela. The total outlay for this grand occasion by both the state and central governments stands at around ₹7,500 crore for nearly 384 development projects.
In the previous Ardha (half) Mela in 2019, around 24 crore people visited the festival. This time, the government has increased the Mela ground to 4,000 hectares, up by 20% over 2019. The Mela ground has been divided into 25 sectors.
Around 1.6 lakh tents have been installed to accommodate visitors. The number of pucca ghats has been increased to nine from four earlier. Additional power infrastructure, water supply network and rail and bus transportation systems have been created to meet the requirements during the festival period.
In addition to its religious significance, the Kumbh Mela is set to boost the economy as well. According to reports, the Kumbh Mela generated business of ₹1.2 lakh crore in 2019, while the Maha Kumbh Mela held in 2013 generated revenues of ₹12,000 crore.
The government is expected to gain additional revenue from various avenues, like local parking taxes. Businesses have also geared up to benefit from this year's largest congregation of pilgrims. Reports suggest that companies have lined up an expenditure of ₹3,000 crore to grab devotees' attention during the Mela.
Major players in tourism and hospitality, transportation, FMCG, event management, and other sectors are set to benefit from the festival. The mela is also set to generate employment for around 6 lakh people.
Indian Railways is running around 13,000 trains, including 3,000 special trains for the Kubha Mela. Around two crore passengers are expected to reach the Maha Kumbh by train.
