SUMMARY
At close, the S&P BSE SENSEX stood at 81,526.14, up 16 points, or 0.02%, while the broader NIFTY50 index of the NSE settled the session at 24,641.80, up 32 points, or 0.13%.
The top five gainers were Trent, Bajaj Finance, Britannia, Shriram Finance, and Hero MotoCorp.
The US inflation data will shape the Federal Reserve's interest rate outlook, which could impact foreign inflows into emerging markets such as India.
Meanwhile, economists expect domestic inflation to have eased in November, a Reuters poll showed. The data is due on Thursday.

Out of 50 constituents, 26 advanced and 23 declined, while 1 scrip remained unchanged.
On the SENSEX, Bajaj Finance (up 2.6%) was the top gainer, followed by Nestle India and Bajaj Finserv.
The top losers were JSW Steel and Adani Ports.
The stock ended at ₹780.80, up 9.16% on the BSE.
According to news reports, the global brokerage firm has said that its competitive moat faces increasing pressure.
The brokerage added that DMart does not have any competitive advantage in fresh food categories in urban settings, and large sections of India's grocery market are not addressable by DMart.
The stock ended at ₹3,720, down 2.52%.
Shares of Titagarh Rail Systems gained 6.65% to ₹1,313.35 on the National Stock Exchange (NSE).
The BSE MidCap index ended at 48,084.73, up 117.58 points, or 0.25%, while the BSE SmallCap index ended at 57,703.48, up 200 points, or 0.35%.
All but banking, power, and utility indices ended with gains. The biggest sectoral gainers were consumer durables stocks. The BSE CONSUMER DURABLES index ended at 66,494.79, up 0.59%.
On the other hand, the BSE POWER index ended at 7,582.37, down 0.34%.
A total of 4,096 stocks traded on the BSE on Wednesday. Out of this, 2,146 stocks advanced and 1,840 scrips declined, while 110 shares remained unchanged.
As many as 272 stocks hit their 52-week high levels while 15 stocks fell to their 52-week low levels.
Further, as many as 412 stocks hit their upper circuit limits, and 200 shares touched their lower circuit bands.
