Muhurat Trading 2025: The Indian stock market closed higher on Tuesday, October 21, following the special Muhurat trading session, led by gains in metal and media stocks amid positive global cues.

Muhurat trading is a one-hour, symbolic trading session conducted by Indian stock exchanges on Diwali, a Hindu festival considered auspicious for new beginnings, including investments.

At close, the S&P BSE SENSEX stood at the 84,426.34 level, rising 62.97 points, or 0.07%, while the NSE's NIFTY50 index climbed 25.45 points, or 0.1%, to close at the 25,868.60 level.
During the intraday period, SENSEX and NIFTY50 had touched highs of 84,665.44 and 25,934.35, respectively.

According to exchange data, on Monday, the foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought equities worth ₹790.45 crore on a net basis, while the domestic institutional investors (DIIs) purchased ₹2,485.46 crore worth of equities.

Most of the Asian markets were trading higher on expectations of easing trade tensions between the US and China. Hong Kong's Hang Seng advanced 0.75%, Singapore's Straits Times gained 1.08%, and Japan's Nikkei rose 0.36%. South Korea’s Kospi and China’s Shanghai Composite also rallied 0.24% and 1.34%, respectively.

Overnight, US stocks surged on Monday, lifted by gains in Apple shares over demand for its latest iPhone design. It was the strongest force lifting the S&P 500 and set its own record high.

The S&P 500 climbed 1.1% and pulled within 0.3% of its all-time high set earlier this month. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 515 points, or 1.1%, and the Nasdaq Composite gained 1.4%.

Market statistics

As many as 3,039 stocks traded on the NSE on Tuesday. Out of this, 2,213 advanced and 710 declined, while 116 scrips remained unchanged.

This, however, indicates that the market breadth favoured advances.

A total of 106 stocks hit their 52-week highs, while 36 stocks touched their one-year lows. Besides, 93 stocks hit their upper circuit limits, and 17 touched their lower circuit bands on Tuesday.

NSE-listed firms' market capitalisation stood at ₹468.32 lakh crore at the end of the session.

The volatility index India VIX lost 0.50% to close at 11.30 levels.

Broader market

The NIFTY Midcap 100 index rose 0.11%, ending at 59,409.55 levels, while the NIFTY Smallcap 100 gauge settled 0.52% higher at 18,300.65 levels.

Sectoral watch

Among sectors, Nifty Realty (-0.09%) and Nifty PSU Bank (-0.06%) were the only losers.

Nifty Media (up 0.56%) led the gainers, followed by Nifty Metal (0.40%), Nifty Pharma (0.34%), Nifty Auto (0.16%), and Nifty Oil & Gas (0.05%).

Top gainers and losers

On Tuesday, 24 stocks advanced on the NIFTY50 index, while 24 settled in red and two remained unchanged.

Cipla, which touched a 52-week high during the session, was the top contributor, rising 1.58%. Other major gainers included Bajaj Finserv (1.18%), Infosys (0.69%), JSW Steel (0.68%), and Grasim Industries (0.67%).

On the other hand, Kotak Mahindra Bank (-0.98%), ICICI Bank (-0.65%), Asian Paints (-0.64%), UltraTech Cement (-0.61%), and HCL Technologies (-0.60%) were the top laggards on the 50-share index.
