Defence stocks like Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), Bharat Dynamics, BEML, Paras Defence, among others, powered the sectoral benchmark index, Nifty India Defence, up more than 1% on Tuesday, August 18, after the Ministry of Defence announced its ₹3,070 crore business opportunity plan.

NSE data showed that the Nifty India Defence index surged 1.22% to touch its intraday high of 9,962.20 points on Tuesday’s market, in comparison to 9,841.50 points at the previous equity market close.

This surge comes after the Ministry of Defence’s Department of Defence Production (DDP) disclosed a list of 405 “strategically important items” which the government aims to purchase, giving defence equipment makers an opportunity estimated at around ₹3,070 crore.

As per the official announcement, out of the total 405 items comprising a broad range of defence platforms and systems, 16 items are set to be acquired by the Indian Coast Guard, and the remaining 389 items will be purchased by other defence PSUs.

Companies manufacturing these defence platforms and systems will remain in focus of investors, as they are expected to be the potential beneficiaries from government order inflows in the upcoming period.

Key order items in focus

Among the list of 405 strategically important items, the Ministry of Defence aims to acquire several air platforms, armoured platforms, naval warships, and missile systems, among other things, which will be supplied by these Indian companies.

“The list contains Line Replaceable Units, sub-systems, sub-assemblies, spares, components and raw materials,” as per the official announcement.

Air platforms: Within air platforms, the government aims to acquire Advanced Light Helicopter, Light Utility Helicopter, Su-30MKI, Light Combat Aircraft and AL-31FP Engine.
Armoured platforms: As per the announcement, ground armoured vehicles like T-72, T-90 and BMP-II will be acquired by the government.
Warships: The government will also acquire naval warships, which will be potentially added to the Indian Navy fleet.
Missile systems: Missile systems like Konkurs-M, Invar and MRSAM will be acquired by the defence forces.
Electronic equipment: Defence electronic equipment, including radars, sonars, fire control systems and satellite communication systems, among other things, will be acquired as part of this move.
Others: Key equipment like High Explosive Anti-Tank ammunition and other critical defence equipment will also be acquired as part of the business opportunity.

The Ministry said that each item will have an indicative timeline for indigenisation, and after the same, these items will be procured from Indian industries.

“Upon successful indigenous development, these items will be procured from the Indian industry,” the Ministry of Defence said in the official announcement.

With this initiative, the government aims to further expand opportunities for the Indian industry, strengthen the domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem, promote investment & innovation, and contribute to reducing dependence on imports.
