Top gainers and losers, September 8: SBI LIC, ICICI Bank slump 2%, BEL jumps 2%; check list

Top gainers and losers: The Indian benchmark indices, SENSEX and NIFTY50, closed in negative territory on Tuesday, September 8, amid a sell-off in private bank and financial services stocks.

Furthermore, surging crude oil prices, amid an intensifying situation in West Asia, along with rising bond yields in the United States, also impacted investor sentiment.

The SENSEX declined as much as 0.8% to hit an intraday low of 75,553.35. Meanwhile, the NIFTY50 fell as much as 0.7% to touch the session’s low of 23,623.10 during Tuesday’s trading session.

On September 8, the 30-share BSE SENSEX slumped 0.73% or 555.23 points to close at 75,577.58, while the 50-share NIFTY slipped by 0.61% or 144.05 points to end at 23,635.10.

NIFTY50 top gainers and losers

SBI Life Insurance Company (-2.04%), ICICI Bank (-1.97%), Axis Bank (-1.67%), UltraTech Cement (-1.67%), and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) (-1.32%) were among the top losers in the NIFTY50 index.

On the other hand, the top gainers included Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) (1.62%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL) (1.02%), Eicher Motors (0.98%), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) (0.98%) and Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (0.93%).

Shares of BEL surged, along with other defence equipment manufacturing companies, as the defence ministry on Monday approved the acquisition of military hardware for the three services, including radars, advanced light helicopters and mechanical mine layers at an estimated cost of ₹1.10 lakh crore to boost the military's overall combat prowess.

The procurement proposals were cleared by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) headed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

"The DAC accorded Acceptance of Necessity (AoN), which is in-principle administrative approval, to various acquisition proposals of the defence forces at an estimated cost of about ₹1,10,000 crore," the ministry said. READ MORE.

NIFTY Midcap 100 top gainers and losers

NSE’s NIFTY midcap gauge, the Midcap 100, ended 0.21% or 129.65 points higher at 62,915.80 on September 8.

Its top winners included GE Vernova T&D India, which closed 8.77% higher, after the company said it has emerged as the L1 bidder for a Power Grid Corporation of India project.

The project involves the design and establishment of a 6,000 MW, ±800 kV HVDC LCC terminal station for evacuating renewable power from Barmer II in Rajasthan to South Kalamb in Maharashtra. The project involves two 3,000 MW terminal stations and will be executed over multiple years.

The other top winners were Laurus Labs (3.74%), Kalyan Jewellers India (3.65%), Bharat Forge (2.49%) and FSN E-Commerce Ventures (2.49%).

On the flip side, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (-2.77%), 360 ONE WAM (-2.37%), Blue Star (-2.35%), Hitachi Energy India (-2.01%) and Voltas (-1.92%) were among the top laggards.

NIFTY Smallcap 100 top gainers and losers

The NIFTY Smallcap 100 closed at 20,133.75, marking a 33.55-point or 0.21% increase.

The top gainers included Data Patterns (7.61%), Neuland Laboratories (4.81%), Hindustan Copper (4.69%), Sai Life Sciences (4.46%), and Bandhan Bank (4.18%).

The stock of Hindustan Copper soared as copper prices hit a record high. Copper prices climbed to a record high as the prospect of additional US tariffs coincided with output disruptions at major mines.

On the contrary, the top losers were IDBI Bank (-10.50%), IFCI (-10.01%), Afcons Infrastructure (-4.30%), IIFL Finance (-4.24%) and Physicswallah (-2.51%).
