Great Eastern Shipping shares in focus as board approves buyback of up to ₹900 crore; key details

GESHIP share price: Shares of the Great Eastern Shipping Company are expected to be on investors’ radar on Friday, August 28, as the company said that its board of directors considered and approved the proposal for a share buyback of up to ₹900 crore.

According to a regulatory filing dated August 26, the company said that its board of directors approved the proposal for buyback of fully paid-up equity shares, with a face value of ₹10 each, from all shareholders or beneficial owners of the equity shares, other than the promoters and shareholders belonging to the promoter group of the firm, through the open market route.

The firm further stated that it will buy back the shares at a maximum buyback price of ₹1,530 per unit, payable in cash, for an aggregate amount up to ₹900 crore, which is the maximum buyback size.

At the maximum buyback size and price, the indicative maximum number of equity shares to be bought back would be 58,82,352 shares, representing 4.12% of its total paid-up equity share capital as on August 27, 2026, which is less than 25% of its existing paid-up equity capital, the company stated.

“The Maximum Buyback Size represents 7.19% and 6.34% of the aggregate of the Company’s fully paid-up equity share capital and free reserves as per the latest audited standalone and consolidated financial statements of the Company as on March 31, 2026, respectively, which is not more than 10% of the aggregate of the total paid-up capital and free reserves,” it further added.

It further said that the company will utilise at least 75% of the maximum buyback size, i.e., ₹675 crore for the buyback.

Furthermore, based on the minimum buyback size and the maximum buyback price, it will purchase an indicative minimum of 44,11,764 equity shares, it said.

The Great Eastern Shipping Company added that it will release the timeline and other statutory details of the buyback in due course.

Great Eastern Shipping stock performance

Shares of Great Eastern Shipping Company closed 1.13% lower at ₹1,317.20 per unit on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) on Thursday. However, the buyback was announced after the market closed.

The scrip advanced more than 1% in the past week but lost 6% over the month. On a year-to-date (YTD) basis, it has risen 18%.

While the stock hit a 52-week high of ₹1,798 per equity share on May 19, 2026, it touched a year’s low of ₹922.50 apiece on September 1, 2025.

The Great Eastern Shipping Company has a total market capitalisation of ₹18,802.44 crore as of August 27, 2026, according to data on the NSE.
