SUMMARY

Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd traded at a 34x price-to-earnings ratio, above its five-year median of 30x and the 20-27x PE of global peers. Strong revenue visibility, debt-free status, and the government's indigenization focus are among the key factors behind the premium valuation.

Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd's shares rallied over 3.6% at the close on Tuesday at ₹5,031 apiece on the NSE. The rally was driven by the positive sectoral tailwind after the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) approved ₹1.10 lakh crore worth of defence equipment. The Defence Ministry said, “The DAC accorded Acceptance of Necessity (AoN), which is in-principle administrative approval, to various acquisition proposals of the defence forces at an estimated cost of about ₹1.10 lakh crore”.

Soon after the announcement, shares of defence equipment makers surged as much as 8% on Tuesday, as prospects of new order wins broadened. Moreover, it will also give a boost to the ancillary space as a spillover effect. Among all major stocks, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd seems to be a major beneficiary, with expected new orders for Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH). Consequently, global brokerages updated their outlook on the stock.

CLSA said the DAC’s approval could add 13% to the existing order book of over ₹2.5 lakh crore as of FY26 and reiterated that HAL remains the cheapest pure-play defence stock. Similarly, Goldman Sachs said HAL remains a key beneficiary of the latest approval, with an estimated outlay of ₹25,000-₹30,000 crore for an order win of advanced light helicopters.

Meanwhile, shares made a fresh 52-week high on Tuesday amid renewed optimism around the stock. After the recent smart recovery from the 52-week lows, the shares continued to attract investor attention even at a premium valuation compared to its global peers.

Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd traded at a 34x price-to-earnings ratio, above its five-year median of 30x and the 20-27x PE of global peers.

What factors have led HAL to command the premium valuation despite its own tailwinds? Lets explore

Robust earnings visibility

Hindustan Aeronautics FY26 order-book-to-sales ratio stands at 7.9x with an order book of ₹2.54 lakh crore and total sales of ₹33,089 crore. With a humongous order backlog and equally strong order pipeline visibility, the shares continued to receive strong attention and buying interest from investors. In comparison with global peers like Lockheed Martin (2.3x) and Dassault Systèmes (6.3x), HAL’s orderbook-to-sales ratio holds the top position in terms of revenue visibility, aiding its premium valuation.

Superior margin profile

In comparison with its global peers like Dassault Systèmes, Lockheed Martin, RTX Corporation, and BAE Systems, HAL continues to operate at over ~30% EBITDA margin, as compared to 10-15% of global peers. The superior margin is primarily driven by judicious diversification of revenue from the high-margin overhaul and maintenance segment.

Debt-free status

The company has consistently held a debt-free and strong cash position for the past five years. The debt-free and high cash position is driven by strong customer advance reserves taken by the company to address the high-capex business. With excess advances, the company continues to remain solvent and avoid taking on any short-term or long-term debt.

Strong customer concentration

Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd remains India’s top defence player with the highest order book at ₹2.5 lakh crore. The majority of the orders are driven by the Government of India’s focus on indigenization of defence equipment, from aircraft to missiles. Considering the geopolitical instability, situational preparedness requires a more advanced fleet of aircraft, which gives more visibility of the order book for the company.

All the above factors determine the company’s premium valuation over its long-term average and global peers. Here is how HAL fares against the global peers

Execution remains a key risk and headwind

Despite the premium valuation and all the justified factors, slower execution of orders remains a key headwind for the company. On a 5-year timeframe, the company’s sales have grown at 7% CAGR. With high margins and strong profitability, the company has maintained command over its premium valuation of a 34x price-to-earnings ratio, whereas the global peers with even larger order books trade at a discount to HAL’s valuation.
