Crude oil impact

Although global crude oil prices have retracted from their recent peak of $110 per barrel (bbl) last week, energy prices remained elevated due to tensions and re-escalations between the United States and Iran in West Asia, with no signs of a peace agreement.

Investing.com data showed that global benchmark Brent crude oil prices surged nearly 11% in the last five trading sessions and gained over 22% in the last one-month period. In the last three months, Brent crude prices have risen 31.6% and nearly 5% in the past six months.

As of 2:53 pm (IST), Brent crude oil prices were up 2.51% to $108.36 per barrel on Tuesday’s market, in comparison to $105.68 per bbl at the previous commodity market close, according to the exchange data.

The elevated oil prices in the market have a direct impact on investors’ sentiment and the metal and mining companies' margins, as they use a significant amount of oil to run machines and heavy equipment.

This increase in expenses, combined with the rise in shipping and logistical costs during a particular period, shrinks the overall EBITDA margins, reducing the overall operating profit in the upcoming period.

Metal prices fall

Commodity prices like those of Aluminium, Zinc, and Copper declined on Tuesday’s market amid heightened geopolitical uncertainty due to the West Asia conflict. Metal and mining companies benefit from margin gains if metal prices increase in the global market, and losses out of margins if the prices fall.

In case of a fall in prices, these metal producers will have to sell their production at lower prices which in turn impacts the company, losing out on the potential revenue gains due to the elevated rates.

Investing.com data showed that Aluminium prices declined 0.43%, Copper lost 0.14%, Lead lost 0.34%, Nickel declined 1.26%, and Zinc lost 1.4% during the trading session on September 15.
