Top gainers and losers, Sept 1: Maruti Suzuki tumbles 5%, Nestle, IndiGo fall 4%, ITC surges 4%; check list

Top gainers and losers: The Indian benchmark indices, SENSEX and NIFTY50, closed flat with a negative bias on Tuesday, September 1, amid a surge in crude oil prices and a sell-off in auto and banking stocks. Auto stocks declined as automakers began releasing their August 2026 sales figures.

Crude oil prices surged due to the escalation in West Asia, prompting supply concerns and eroding hopes of a peace deal.

The SENSEX tumbled as much as 0.4% to hit an intraday low of 76,656.12, while the NIFTY50 slumped as much as 0.53% to touch the session’s low of 23,952.55.

On September 1, the SENSEX declined by 12.99 points or 0.017% to end at 76,944.28. Meanwhile, the NIFTY50 closed lower by 24.60 points or 0.10% at 24,055.80.

NIFTY50 top gainers and losers

The 50-share NIFTY index was weighed down by selling in Shriram Finance, which closed 5.05% lower.

It was followed by Maruti Suzuki India (-4.70%), Nestle India (-4.01%), InterGlobe Aviation (-3.77%) and Max Healthcare Institute (-3.75%), which were among the top losers of the day.

Shares of Maruti Suzuki declined as the automaker reported a 10% month-on-month (MoM) fall in its August sales to 2,19,220 units, compared to 2,41,421 units in July 2026.

Furthermore, the stock of InterGlobe Aviation, the parent company of IndiGo, fell as the prices of aviation turbine fuel (ATF) were hiked by 5.46%, in line with a rise in their international benchmarks. The price of jet fuel, or ATF, has been raised by ₹6.28 per litre, or 5.46%, to ₹121.28 per litre for domestic airlines, according to state-owned oil firms.

On the other hand, the top gainers included ITC Ltd (4.23%), Adani Ports & SEZ (3.45%), Bharti Airtel (3.10%), HCL Technologies (3.03%) and Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) (2.02%).

Shares of ITC Ltd surged on Tuesday, after the announcement that ITC Infotech, its wholly owned subsidiary, will merge with Bengaluru-based Happiest Minds Technologies to create an AI-first enterprise with a $1 billion turnover by FY28.

As a precursor to the merger, ITC Infotech will acquire a 22.106% stake from Happiest Minds promoter Ashok Soota and Ashok Soota Medical Research LLP, according to regulatory filings. Following the stake purchase, Happiest Minds will be amalgamated with and into ITC Infotech.

Additionally, ONGC, an oil upstream company, saw its shares rise, as investors reacted to global crude oil prices surging to a 7-day high above $91 per barrel (bbl) amid recent escalations between the United States and Iran in West Asia.

NIFTY Midcap 100 top gainers and losers

NSE’s midcap gauge, the NIFTY Midcap 100, fell by 890.25 points, or 1.39%, to close at 63,334.50 on Tuesday.

The top laggards included KEI Industries (-6.84%), Polycab India (-5.82%), One 97 Communications (-4.87%), Kalyan Jewellers India (-4.66%) and Prestige Estates Projects (-3.86%).

On the flip side, Persistent Systems (3.67%), Info Edge (India) (3.27%), MphasiS Ltd (3.22%), Marico (2.21%) and Hero MotoCorp (1.93%) were among the top winners.

NIFTY Smallcap 100 top gainers and losers

The NIFTY Smallcap 100 ended at 19,886.25, registering a 45.40-point or 0.23% fall on September 1.

The top losers were Computer Age Management Services (-3.84%), Kfin Technologies (-3.35%), Aegis Logistics (-3.29%), Anant Raj (-3.05%) and Piramal Finance (-2.97%).

On the contrary, Welspun Corp (6.91%), Sai Life Sciences (4.73%), Zensar Technologies (2.93%), Himadri Speciality Chemical (2.55%) and City Union Bank (2.10%) were among the top gainers.
