Key indices recovered early losses and closed at record highs on Wednesday, with NIFTY settling above 26,000 level, driven by late buying in banking, pharma and power sector shares. SENSEX also settled above 85,000 for the first time.

In a see-saw trade, the 50-issue NIFTY closed at 26,004, up by 63.75 points, or 0.25%. As many as 30 of its components ended in the green. After a gap-down opening, the benchmark index slipped 69 points to hit a low of 25,871 in afternoon deals. However, recovery in banking and power shares helped the index trim losses and trade in the green in the pre-close session. The index hit a high of 26,032 in intraday trade.

Benchmark SENSEX closed above the 85,000 mark at 85,169, up by 255 points, or 0.3%. After a weak opening, the index shed 171 points to hit a low of 84,743. Buying in the pre-close session pulled the index out of the red zone and hit a high of 85,247.

Market breadth remained negative. Out of 2,874 stocks traded, 1,594 declined, and 1,197 advanced. As many as 135 stocks hit 52-week highs, while 34 stocks hit 52-week lows.

Power Grid, Axis Bank, NTPC lead gainers

Power Grid emerged as the biggest gainer among NIFTY shares, rising by over 4% at the close. The stock hit a 52-week high of ₹366.25 during the day amid reports the government is considering for market coupling of power exchanges.
Axis Bank rallied 2.39% after the private lender announced a partnership with Mastercard to launch a credit card for small business owners with various benefits.
State-owned NTPC gained over 2% to hit a 52-week high of ₹437 apiece on the NSE after its subsidiary NTPC Green filed the draft red herring prospectus (DRHP) for a public listing. The IPO is expected in November.
Bajaj Finserv rose by 1.59% while Grasim Industries advanced 1.55%. Among others, Hindalco Industries Ltd also hit a 52-week high of ₹730.9 before closing marginally down due to profit taking.

LTIM, Tech Mahindra and Tata Consumer lead losers

LTIM was the biggest loser among NIFTY shares, dropping by 3.69%. Tech Mahindra also dropped 2.27% to emerge as the second-biggest loser.
Tata Consumer shares fell 1.87% while another Tata group firm Tata Motors shed 1.36%. Titan lost 1.02%.

Among other stocks ending in the red, Hero MotoCorp, Wipro, Kotak Mahindra Bank and JSW Steel declined between 0.7% and 1%.
