Top gainers and losers, May 5: ICICI Bank falls 2%, Jio Financial down over 1%, M&M surges 4%

Top gainers and losers: The Indian benchmark indices, SENSEX and NIFTY50, closed in negative territory on Tuesday, May 5, amid rising geopolitical tensions.

On Monday, the foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought shares worth ₹2,835.62 crore, while the domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought equities worth ₹4,764.16 crore on a net basis, according to exchange data.

The SENSEX tumbled as much as 0.98% to an intraday low of 76,515.03, while the NIFTY50 touched the session’s low of 23,882.05.

On May 5, the SENSEX dropped by 251.61 points or 0.33% to settle at 77,017.79. Similarly, the NIFTY50 closed lower by 251.61 points or 0.33% at 25,157.50.

NIFTY50 top gainers and losers

The 50-share NIFTY index was dragged down by selling in the shares of ICICI Bank, which closed 1.57% lower.

It was followed by Jio Financial Services (-1.48%), Coal India (-1.48%), Tech Mahindra (-1.39) and Axis Bank (-1.36%), which were among the top losers of the day.

On the other hand, the top pack of gainers was led by Mahindra & Mahindra, which surged 3.68%, as it reported a 53% year-on-year (YoY) jump in its standalone net profit at ₹3,737 crore for the quarter ended March 31, 2026, as compared to ₹2,437 crore in the same quarter of the financial year 2025-26.

UltraTech Cement (1.54%), Hindalco Industries (1.37%), Bajaj Finserv (1.16%) and HDFC Life Insurance Company (1.13%) trailed behind M&M.

NIFTY Midcap 100 top gainers and losers

NSE’s midcap gauge, the NIFTY Midcap 100, advanced by 104.75 points, or 0.17%, to 60,264.50 on Tuesday.

The top winners included Aditya Birla Capital, which closed 4.24% higher, as the company posted a 30.6% YoY increase in its consolidated net profit (attributable to the owners of the company) to ₹1,129.16 crore for the reporting quarter. In the corresponding period of FY25, it had clocked a profit of ₹864.60 crore.

It was followed by Aurobindo Pharma (3.92%), Dabur India (3.67%), Marico (3.24%) and Mankind Pharma (3.10%).

On the flipside, Voltas (-6.13%), Godrej Properties (-4.67%), MphasiS (-2.64%), Jubilant Foodworks (-2.43%) and One 97 Communications (-2.13%) were among the top laggards.

NIFTY Smallcap 100 top gainers and losers

The NIFTY Smallcap 100 ended at 16,551.20, marking a 149.85 points or 0.90% jump on May 5.

It was supported by buying in CreditAccess Grameen (11.72%), Computer Age Management Services (9.46%), Wockhardt (8.77%), Netweb Technologies India (6.65%) and Tata Technologies (6.17%), which were among the top gainers in the index.

Shares of Wockhardt surged as the company recorded a consolidated net profit of ₹166 crore during the quarter under review, compared to a loss of ₹25 crore in Q4 FY25.

On the contrary, the top losers included CESC (-5.90%), Meesho (-5.46%), Syngene International (-5.43%), Aarti Industries (-5.13%) and Ola Electric Mobility (-4.86%).
