Top gainers and losers, May 27: ONGC tumbles 5%, HDFC Bank falls over 2%, Tata Motors PV up 4%; check list

Top gainers and losers: The Indian benchmark indices, SENSEX and NIFTY50, closed flat with a negative bias on Wednesday, May 27, amid subdued investor sentiment.

On Tuesday, the foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold shares worth ₹2,407.87 crore, while the domestic institutional investors (DIIs) purchased equities worth ₹1,361.43 crore on a net basis, according to exchange data.

The SENSEX declined by as much as 0.34% to touch an intraday low of 75,748.21. Meanwhile, the NIFTY50 touched the session’s low of 23,556.30.

On May 27, the SENSEX dropped by 141.91 points or 0.19% to end at 75,867.80. Similarly, NIFTY closed lower by 6.55 points or 0.03% at 23,907.15.

The stock market will observe a trading holiday on Thursday, May 28, for Bakri Id. The bourses will resume normal operations on Friday, May 29.

NIFTY50 top gainers and losers

The 50-share NIFTY index was dragged down by selling in the shares of Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), which closed 4.94% lower, as its standalone net profit rose 3.13% year-on-year (YoY) to ₹6,649.97 crore for Q4 FY26 as compared to ₹6,448.28 crore for the same quarter in the previous year.

It was followed by HDFC Bank (-2.54%), HDFC Life Insurance Company (-1.36%), Wipro (-1%) and SBI Life Insurance Company (-0.97%), which were among the top losers of the day.

The stock of HDFC Bank declined amid fresh reports related to alleged irregular payment practices and internal governance concerns. According to a report by The Indian Express, just six days before Atanu Chakraborty's abrupt exit from the bank, on March 12, 2026, the Audit Committee of the Board (ACB), under the chairmanship of M D Ranganath, had ordered a formal “Internal Vigilance Investigation” into payments totalling ₹45 crore made to the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), a state government agency, during FY2024 and FY2025. These payments, the Indian Express investigation, based on internal records, has revealed, were meant for MSRDC as “differential interest,” i.e., interest over and above the specified rate, on its deposits.

On the other hand, the top gainers included Tata Motors PV (4.53%), Hindalco Industries (4.23%), Powe Grid Corporation of India (2.73%), Eternal (2.21%) and NTPC (2.09%).

NIFTY Midcap 100 top gainers and losers

NSE’s midcap gauge, the NIFTY Midcap 100, advanced by 259.95 points, or 0.42%, to close at 62,558.85 on Wednesday.

The top winners were Adani Total Gas (14.04%), Exide Industries (7.74%), Swiggy (6.95%), Tube Investments of India (5.95%), and Suzlon Energy (5.81%).

On the flipside, MCX (-4.6%), Radico Khaitan (-3.87%), BSE (-3.48%), Bharat Dynamics (-3.08%) and Rail Vikas Nigam (-2.66%) were among the top laggards.

NIFTY Smallcap 100 top gainers and losers

The NIFTY Smallcap 100 ended at 18,294.30, up by 27.10 points or 0.15% on May 27.

Pine Labs (6.21%), Netweb Technologies India (6%), IFCI (5.95%), Ola Electric Mobility (4.71%) and Wockhardt (4.70%) were among the top gainers.

Shares of Ola Electric rose on Wednesday, May 27, after the company received regulatory nod for a new electric scooter in the commercial mobility market, news agency PTI reported, citing a government certification document.

On the contrary, the top losers included the Great Eastern Shipping Company (-7.92%), Firstsource Solutions (-4.78%), Brainbees Solutions (-3.42%), Piramal Pharma (-2.44%), and Navin Fluorine International (-2.24%).
