Top gainers and losers, March 20: Tech M, JSW Steel, Tata Steel rise 3%, Hindalco falls 3%; check list

Top gainers and losers: Benchmark indices, SENSEX and NIFTY50, closed in the green on Friday, March 20, bolstered by gains in IT, PSU bank and pharma stocks.

On Thursday, the foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold stocks worth ₹7,558.19 crore, while the domestic institutional investors (DIIs) purchased equities worth ₹3,863.96 crore on a net basis, according to exchange data.

The SENSEX soared by as many as 1,079.15 points to an intraday high of 75,286.39. Meanwhile, the NIFTY50 touched the session’s high of 23,345.15.

The SENSEX closed 325.96 points or 0.44% higher at 74,532.96. The 50-share NIFTY advanced by 112.35 points or 0.49% to end at 23,114.50.

NIFTY50 top gainers and losers

The 50-share NIFTY index was supported by Tech Mahindra (3.41%), JSW Steel (3.28%), Tata Steel (3.08%), Coal India (2.99%) and Infosys (2.88%), which were among the top gainers.

Shares of Tech Mahindra and Infosys advanced amid a rally in NIFTY IT after Accenture Plc reported robust earnings growth in Q2FY26. Moreover, the revised guidance for the full financial year has boosted investor confidence for IT stocks.

On the flip side, the top losers in the index were Hindalco Industries (-2.80%), HDFC Bank (-2.15%), Shriram Finance (-1.66%), HDFC Life Insurance Company (-1.40%) and Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (-1.32%).

HDFC Bank’s stock fell for the second day after its non-executive chairman, Atanu Chakraborty, abruptly resigned on March 18, citing differences over “values and ethics” – a ground that the management said was baffling, as the former bureaucrat offered no specific instance despite repeated requests.

NIFTY Midcap 100 top gainers and losers

NSE’s midcap gauge, the NIFTY Midcap 100, gained by 363.20 points, or 0.67%, to close at 54,855.50 on Friday.

The index was bolstered by buying in the stock of Tata Elxsi, which ended 4.87% higher, as it launched a Global Offshore Development Centre (ODC) for Terumo Corporation.

The other top winners included Vodafone Idea (4.59%), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (4.36%), Glenmark Pharmaceuticals (3.93%) and Bharat Heavy Electricals (3.77%).

Shares of Glenmark Pharma rose amid a broad-based surge in NIFTY Pharm stocks, as Semaglutide, the GLP‑1 molecule used in weight-loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy, is set to expire on Saturday, March 21.

On the contrary, the top laggards were Coromandel International (-3.32%), BSE Ltd (-3.22%), ITC Hotels (-3.08%), Phoenix Mills (-2.32%) and MRF (-2.06%).

The NIFTY Smallcap 100 ended at 15,718.60, up by 0.09% or 14.35 points on March 20.

Shares of Brainbees Solutions closed 20% higher. Ola Electric Mobility (6.94%), Inox Wind (4.65%), JB Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals (4.56%) and Anant Raj (4.51%) were among the other top gainers.

On the other hand, the top losers in the index included Multi-Commodity Exchange of India (-4.76%), Mahanagar Gas (-4.01%), Aadhar Housing Finance (-3.19%), Karur Vysya Bank (-2.69%) and Triveni Turbine (-2.43%).
