Top gainers and losers, Aug 21: Powergrid Corp jumps 3%, HDFC Life rises 2%, Maruti Suzuki falls 2%; check list

Top gainers and losers: The Indian benchmark indices SENSEX and NIFTY closed flat with a positive bias on Friday, August 21. The markets ended in the green for the second consecutive session.

The SENSEX advanced as much as 0.2% to hit an intraday high of 77,725.67. Meanwhile, the NIFTY50 climbed as much as 0.22% to touch the session’s peak of 24,284.05.

On August 21, the SENSEX rose by 3.11 points or 0.004% to close at 77,540.83. The NIFTY50 edged higher by 20.15 points or 0.08% to end at 24,252.

NIFTY50 top gainers and losers

The NIFTY50 pack was led by gains in Powergrid Corporation of India, which closed 2.87% higher.

It was followed by HDFC Life Insurance Company (2.36%), Kotak Mahindra Bank (1.37%), Nestle India (1.31%) and Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) (1.12%), which were among the other top gainers.

On the other hand, the top losers included Maruti Suzuki India (-1.77%), Trent (-1.55%), HCL Technologies (-1.21%), InterGlobe Aviation (-1.06%) and Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (-0.88%).

Shares of InterGlobe Aviation, the parent company of IndiGo, declined following DGCA's report on July domestic air passenger traffic data. According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) data, domestic air passenger traffic slipped 4.80% to 1.20 crore in July from 1.26 crore recorded in the year-ago month, with all major Indian airlines seeing a drop in the load factor.

The Gurugram-based IndiGo carried 80.82 lakh passengers during the previous month against 89.20 lakh in June; Tata Sons-owned Air India group flew 28.75 lakh passengers during the reporting period compared to 32.22 lakh in June 2026, DGCA data showed.

NIFTY MIDCAP 100 top gainers and losers

The NSE’s Midcap 100 index ended at 63,735.75, up by 64.20 points or 0.10% on August 21.

The top winners included Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL) (3.19%), Prestige Estates Projects (2.87%), National Aluminium Company Ltd (2.30%), GE Vernova T&D India (2.16%) and Hitachi Energy India (2.04%).

On the flip side, KEI Industries (-2.60%), Adani Total Gas (-1.88%), Billionbrains Garage Ventures (-1.80%), Polycab India (-1.74%) and Exide Industries (-1.66%) were among the top laggards.

NIFTY Smallcap 100 top gainers and losers

The NIFTY Smallcap 100 index closed higher by 136.30 points or 0.69% at 19,977.75.

It was supported by gains in Welspun Corp, which ended 14.26% higher. It hit a 52-week high during Friday’s trading session, as the company has secured a record order. The company, in its filing to exchanges, said it has secured the largest single order in its history — valued at approx $1.8 billion (~₹17,200 Crore) — for the supply of pipes from its manufacturing facility in the United States of America.

“This record-breaking order is the single largest ever awarded to the Company and marks a defining milestone in its global growth trajectory, reaffirming its leadership position as a trusted, large-scale partner to the global energy and infrastructure sector,” the company said.

The other top gainers were Urban Company (8.19%), IIFL Finance (7.26%), Reliance Power (6.50%) and JBM Auto (6.35%).

On the contrary, the top losers included Himadri Speciality Chemical (-6.99%), Aditya Birla Real Estate (-3.29%), Cohance Lifesciences (-2.78%), CreditAccess Grameen (-2.38%) and Pine Labs (-1.86%).
